On February 13, 2008, I purchased a Germanicus dupondius from the ebay seller SPQR, a rare and popular coin. In a week or so, I recieved the package. But it didn't have my dupondius! Instead, it had a Viminacium sestertius of Otacilia Severa, a coin worth MUCH less. After doing some research, I found that he sold that coin to another individual on the same day. This was obviously a simple mistake. I sent the coin back, hoping to get my dupondius. But apparently, the other ebayer never returned it. SPQR did refund my money, at least, so I really can't blame him. Still, I must say, I'm rather dissappointed. Let me know if you see this coin offered on ebay or elsewhere.

I made a stolen coin report on Forvm:

Sorry to hear of that, but that's good that you were refunded. I'm sure that issue will show up sooner or later and you'll have another chance.

That's a shame- it's a cool coin. I'll keep an eye out. Hope it shows up for you.

Thanks for the support, guys! I appreciate the help.

In case you're wondering why I don't just order a new one - I managed to get win that one for only $36 - it'll take me forever to find another deal like that, especially with the next cheapest one on vcoins in the $200's!!!

Same thing happened to me on a Shield Nickel. I was high bidder on a well-worn example that I recognized as an uncommon (not rare) variety that was worth 2 to 3 times my total cost. (I think my cost was less than $10.) The coin I received was the common variety of that date - not the coin I had bid on. I contacted the seller and he refunded my money. He did not mean to deceive me at all. He did not pay particular attention to matching each coin with the correct auction; he mainly went by date and condition.

Sorry about your loss! You didnt lose money, but you are out one cool coin! Absent any indication of wrong doing on the part of the seller, i would give him the benifit of the doubt. I have been on the recieving end of a coin set worth 10x what i paid for mine. I did return it to the seller and did recieve my coins, the ones i paid for... i do wonder what the other buyer - the one whose coin set i originaly recieved - was thinking when he opened the set that was worth much less then he paid... was he also thinking the seller was trying to screw him?

Ebay is full of losers and dead beats - but no everyone on Ebay is like that!!!

Absolutely, the coin I recieved was sold to someone else on ebay on the same day.

Yes, but how do you KNOW that the other buyer received your coin?

Well, that's just paranoia now! Some of us like to believe that there are trustworthy people, even on eBay!

Take it easy on the seller, I believe him.

I said nothing about the seller. I asked how you KNOW that the other buyer received it.

Not the same thing at all.

    I don't understand why

Trying to figure this out. Did the other person that won auction on the same day, recieve the coin that you should have recieved? OT

What I don't understand is how you can claim this is a stolen coin. The buyer did not STEAL anything. If the seller makes the mistake of shipping him the wrong coin it is on the seller's head not the buyers. Is it unethical to keep the coin? Yes. But it isn't illegal which is what stealing is.

Its stolen enough in my book. I OBVIOUSLY know its not the legal definition of stealing - I'm not bringing charges up on anyone or anything. But as far as I'm concerned, I own that coin (technically SPQR does, but he's agreed to sell it to me for the same price if it should ever be returned.)

I don't view this as anything more than an unfortunate accident, in case anyones wondering.

Stolen coin story... what a joke

If you file police report claiming STOLEN coin your in big trouble. YOU come on this forum crying STOLEN coin wanting us to help you find it. You need to go to ebay forum and read about sellers that scam people when and item doesn't bring expected price. They probably failed to put a reserve price on the auction listing. When you recieve an item not as discribed, you should have open dispute console and report transaction to pay pal / ebay. They will pressure the seller and if seller has history there account is suspended. They could have helped you get the coin you paid for or make the seller send you a coin of equal value. They could have also contact the guy that you claim got the coin by mistake and pressure them, if they suspect shill bidder they will suspend both his & sellers accounts. IF you'r being nice to seller hoping he will send $200 coin for $35... LOL... Take the stolen coin story to Judge Judy :( OT

    Mhm...

#1 - I do believe I explicitly stated that I did not and was not going to report it to the police. That would just be plain stupid.

#2 - This is at least a marginally trustworthy seller, not some fly-by-night auctioneer. The communication with him has thusfar been exceptional.

#3 - I DID open a dispute console, and I DID get my money back. I have no quarrel with the seller.

And FINALLY - all I'm asking is that, if anyone sees the coin, let me know. No need to be so uptight about it ozarktravler. You know you'd be disappointed if the same happened to you. Now would we all please stop arguing about it? There is nothing more inane and useless than arguing on the internet!
