I am looking to purchase some 2x2 flips for some of my coins. I have never bought any before and was wondering if there is any "bad" companies to stay away from. I have seen many different ones on ebay including some that say "mylar". Which ones would be the best for me. thanks

Whatever ones you do get, make sure they are PVC free.

Also make sure youuse good quality staples ,"some rust" , and bend the ends back into the cardboard , so they can't rip or scratch you other coins . Also it's a good idea to look at your coins at least every 6 months or more to make sure nothing is forming . spots etc. on them. Good hunting rzage

And 2x2's are NOT for long term storage.
    Consider something like Airtites.
More expensive, but are good for the long term.

What is wrong with 2x2s for long term storage? The good ones have a mylar window, which is inert.

I have coins that have been in 2x2s for almost 40 years with no problems.

Some 2x2's are made of cheep plastic, and some made out of mylar , are not pure mylar . I found out the hardway when some of my coins developed ugly black spotting , this though was after not going to the deposit box for 2 years.:(:(:(:( rzage

Also stay away from the soft flips , they are made out of a non mylar material . The ones made of mylar are hard & brittle , also thet crack very easily . rzage

How closely have you looked at them ? The cardboard dust alone can scratch or hairline the coins, let alone the susceptibility to staple scratches.

Very closely. I removed ten coins from 2x2s this last weekend, including several proofs, and didn't see any problems under 6x magnification.

When I mount coins in 2x2s, I'm careful to remove any cardboard dust from the inside surface of the mylar.

I avoid staples altogether...too many horror stories. Be sure that any storage option that you choose is 'archival'. I use inert mylar w/, self stick inert glue. And I use a pressure can of air to blast the dust particles. It is VERY difficult to get all the little peices of cardboard dust. I'm with KANGA on the airtites, and I am switching. If your coins are not worth investing in archival plastics, like airtites, I would sell them and upgrade.

ME TOO. I've been using all types of 2x2's for as long as they've been in existance. I have 9 of those long red cardboard boxes with two rows for 2x2's. All are filled and not one single coin has turned, changed, toned, corroded, tarnished or anything else. I flatten all staples with a pair of pliers. And some are made from probably just about any form of plastic ever made. If you have had problems with coins inside a 2x2, you should really check into the location where you keep them. Also, you may want to check the plastic for tears from protruding staples or something. Although a 2x2 is not supposed to be air tight, they are close to it. If properly sealed, very little to no air can reach the coins. If no air, moisture, gasses can reach the coins, then nothing will happen.

Whatever you desice to do, as there are different stories on both sides of the issue - keep in mind... if the item DOES NOT specificly say its Mylar ... DO NOT trust it. I see companies say all the time INERT, PVC free and all that garbage... and they turn out to be junk that is not inert and most like is pvc or vinyl. If the item does not say Mylar, Mylar-D, Prolar or some Polyester based plastic... dont trust it.
