1940 penny red color?

    Why is this so red? Under the microscope, its really red. Thanks

    Sorry, but it’s only environmental damage. Copper is a very reactive metal and who knows what it’s been exposed to during the 79 years since it left the mint.

    Could be anything.. Maybe it was painted at some point.. But it is no kind of error.

    Copper coins can be red, red/brown or brown. Yours looks to be worn paint or stain.

    Old copper large cents can get red corrosion. It is rarer than green corrosion, but it can happen. I must confess that have not looked at enough circulated small cents to see it on them too.
