Tin soldering, paint, or some type of adhesive. Had to have been done at the mint, so you need to add this one to your collection of mint damaged rare coins.

Tough to answer. Lack of education in the hobby I suppose. I know I felt like attacks were the result of something other than the obvious at one time. Still do I suppose to some degree.
Could be. Perhaps they're so sure they found a treasure, their heart is set on it and nothing can change it. A lot of us are like that when we are kids I think. But we eventually grew up.
