Hey guys, these were 3 coins taken from mint packs in 1991, by a customer, when i worked at a gas station. More coins i threw around not knowing. I understand there are some :"special" ones.
Depends on what special means to you. This was a special coin at the time. We had just lost a very popular president and 1964 was the first year it was minted, not even a year after his untimely demise. Coincidentally 1964 was the last year of silver coins, so this half is silver and it is one of the more inspired modern coins produced by the mint. So yes, there are a lot of things special about a 64 Kennedy half.
I can't tell based on your pictures. Here is a link talking about the accented hair Kennedy: https://kennedyhalfdollars.net/1964-accented-hair-variety-kennedy-half-dollar/
To my understanding, there were modifications done to his hair in subsequent years as requested by his widow. But I think what you need is a variety collector to answer your questions.
The special mint set (SMS) coins are only known through coins that were found in the estate of a former mint director. Contrary to the hype generated on YouTube, they won't be found in sets purchased by the public or found in change (I hate the misinformation that the "get rich from pocket change" YouTube Hacks keep posting. It only confuses new collectors). Stay away from YouTube!! @furryfrog02 posted info on identifying the accented hair type. I think these are only found on proof coins (members, please correct this if I'm wrong) and yours don't look like proofs. There are some characteristics to look for, so you should be able to ID it if you have it
Here are some pics. Trying to get more. There is a difference in the rays on the right compared to left.
I do understand that. However, the man standing in front of me at the store I worked at, took them out of a sealed pack in 1991. I dont kmow. Im just tying to see if it was possible that it COULD of been one.
