I recently mailed a submission to NGC. These are all new acquisitions from either last months WFOM in Chicago or CONA from the following week in Ohio. Since I didn't have any of these imaged and my photo skills aren't the best I figured I would pay the $8 per coin. These are all coins that I feel were "better" coins that I didn't mind spending a few extra bucks on. For those of you that don't know. NGC photographs these prior to grading. One thing that I like is that in addition to the below photos they include the photos without the NGC background. Let me know what you think of these photos and if you have had experience with Photo Vision. Overall I am pleased with the results. Some people call these glamour shots. I agree to a certain extent. They do make the coin as appealing as possible. The lighting is perfect or at least close to it which is the biggest benefit to me. I have a hard time getting the lighting correct. This isn't something for just any coin, IMHO, but neither is professional grading. #1 German States BRUNS.-LUNE.-CALEN.-HANN. 1724 EPH Thaler Obverse: Crowned shields in cruciform Obverse Legend: GEORGIUS - D • G • MAG • BR • - FR • ET • HIB • - REX • FID • D • Reverse: Wildman with tree in right hand Reverse Legend: BRUN • & • LUN • DUX • S • R • I • A • R • THES • & EL • Ruler: George Ludwig Note: Dav. #2077. Very nice photos! I have a real problem photographing coins myself. These make your coins very attractive. Unfortunately I have a great many lower value coins that makes it difficult for me to submit to NGC for professional photographing so I'm trying to work with my Sony NEXT-6 camera & specialty lenses to do the photographing myself. Here's an example of a Brazilian coin I photographed: a copper 80 reis, 1832 counterstamped down to 40 reis. Now once you have the coin pix, the gradient background can be easily added by Corel Photopaint or the more expensive Adobe Photoshop. However, I need to improve my photography.
Chris I like the images. If I had to come up with a tweak, I'd offer that the first two may have a bit more contrast than the actual coins. Of course I can't be sure, given I haven't seen the coins. But especially the first one seems really contrasty.
Thanks for the feedback. Coin #1 has a funky look in hand also. I'm sure that NGC is going to recommend conservation. My belief is that laquer was applied to the coin at some point.
I like the 2 spain majorca pieces. I have a couple kind of like them but need the square type like you have. I look forward to seeing how those grade out for you.
Yeah. They do NOW. I submitted some world coins for grading two years ago, and ordered Photo Vision. They shot right through the plastic of the holder with over-lighting. My coin looked nothing like it does in-hand. I think mine were some of the last coins to be photographed this way, and NGC even told me that! Ugh.
This makes sense. I love the coins. By the way, I had the pleasure of viewing a small hoard of slabbed wild men in Fredericksburg on Saturday and thought of your awesome examples.
And you didn't call the sheriff? Hey, I didn't hear about this...are you sure this isn't fake news? (BTW, it's spelled "horde")
How do the pictures compare to the coins in hand? I'll say this is a vast improvement over where NGC's photos used to be. They used to be dreadful. To me, all of these coins appear just slightly overlit, a little too bright, but at least they aren't all red-shifted like PCGS.
Most of them are accurate. The San Marino looks more proof-like in hand than the picture shows. The 1669 1/16 Thaler is a little darker than the photo.
Very cool additions! I requested photo vision on one of my recent NGC submissions and I am very encouraged by the quality of the pictures you received. Do you have any experience with this service and copper coins?
My last submission included some conder tokens and those were imaged. I was very happy with the results.
That is great to know! I just submitted an 1806 proof halfpenny and an 1806 proof farthing that came with their original Soho shells. I can not wait to see how these two turn out.
