Yup, I refer to this particular version as the wishbone. I haven't checked coinfacts images in a long time but several that I found exhibited these cracks

This 1942-D Mercury dime completed my 4-coin purchase. (Posts #3643, #3644, and #3645). This was $18.25. So, a Peace dollar, two Walking Liberty halves, and a dime came in just over $100. Still feel I did OK by looking at commoner dates that other buyers ignored.

Those coins all look very nice and I dig the luster shots.

Garlicus Debt is dumb, cash is king.

I’m just an amateur, and probably wrong, but to me that looks counterfeit. Could just be the pictures. The surfaces don’t look right.

I'm nervous about the devices sinking into the field on the reverse, although I've recently been reminded that that can also happen on real coins when dies are over-polished.

That was part of my concern, as well, but an over-polished die would explain that.

Maybe it was that bourbon that some of the other posters talk about.

I admit I have a hard time parting with more than a few dollars at a time. You can tell that by the number of times I post is this Under $50 thread. A drink or two helps loosen up the tightwad tendencies so I can bid even a little. I almost nailed the $50 mark on this one.

Maybe that's why I bought something that not only was a raw coin, but said "questionable color" right in the title of the listing. But I liked the detail I saw in the seller's photos, and I am working on filling out this decade of Indian cents.

Now here's my issue. Yes, the coin is unnaturally glossy and doesn't have much cartwheel luster. It has very original die erosion lines that don't appear to have been disturbed by cleaning.

But, it is also a dead ringer for the plate coin on the NCG web site. It has the same color and the same glossiness. Even the weakness of the diamonds is identical.

So, did I pay $50 for a problem coin, or did I just pay $50 for a MS65 RD worth $1000?

Now, if I wasn't so cheap I could get it graded and find out.

Edit: I decided to add an obverse photo at the maximum resolution supported on CoinTalk.

Another eBay purchase, this time for an 1890 Indian Head cent for around $45.

First, this is what I had to work with from the seller:

So, I first disregarded everything on the 2x2 except the date. I could see some red, and what I could see of the ribbon and diamonds seemed OK. But Proof Like? Unlikely. And Uncirculated+++++? Ditto.

I am thinking it's an AU58. But the fields do flash a red background in the right light, kind of like a proof. But the fields in front of the face look handled.

I must admit I toyed with thinking it was MS64 for quite a while. I guess it doesn't really matter since I'm appreciating it for what it is, not for what someone else tells me it is.

As for proof-like, here's an actual proof for comparison.

Just got this back from PCGS. Interestingly, online it says "MS63" when you type in the cert number, but the holder says "MS64."
