Aside from the tregedy of this man's death - I don't think the media is calling colorized quarters rare. The way I read the article, they are saying "rare coins, including colorized quarters" a lot different than saying "rare colorized quarters" or "rare coins which are colorized quarters". Its like saying my rare 1804 silver dollar was stolen, including my colorized quarter collection. Yes, going from one exteme to the other, but that is the media. In cases like this, WE need to pull our heads out of our butts and think with some common sense. I don't think the media is reporting this wrong. The media is only reporting what either the police are telling them or what the family members are telling them. Heck, if you ask my wife, she'll tell you that I have rare coins, including my 2008 proof set. Many family members don't know what their coin collector family member owns... everything is rare to them - that way, they can get a bigger insurance check. Can't tell you how many times someone at work tells me about this "rare" silver dollar that their granddad gave them and it turns out to be an Eisenhower dollar or even a common date Morgan.
Jack's right. I still need to get a PO box but things get shredded. If I buy a TV, for instance, the box ends up in a dumpster miles from my house. Fortunately, most people are honest Jonathon but being in a high crime area myself those that aren't really are sitting ducks. Criminals travel you know.
Point taken and whatever at the same time. Been working in a coin shop as of late. Know how many "rare" coins I see on a daily basis that we tell people to spend? Now if I looked at the story this way what do you think Joe Average is going to think? That's the media part dude. However, I had ALREADY thought ahead on this one myself. If the police are really thinking and coins of any REAL value were taken then I'm sure that local coin dealers and pawn shops have been notified. If this is the case coins shouldn't have been mentioned at all you know? Criminals watch TV too.
Clembo, you kill me! That comment is funny. You are a good dude - don't let anyone else tell you differently. Us people, with the most common sense, must prevail. Do you remember my thread about the email my in-laws sent me about the "Godless Dollars". They actually believed this. I am sure there were many media outlets that picked up on this and ran with it. Thats why we are here to set things straight. Mis-information + ignorance = bliss! :goofer:
A few more details have emerged: Police are investigating whether painted quarters that were spent at a convenience store in another city are related to the burglary and murder. Police investigating Clovis connection to Amarillo homicide Somehow "collectible" became "rare" when the article was written. This happens all the time.
That's good advice, Jack. You never know who's keeping an eye out. I live in a semi-rough part of town and I get all my packages/eBay wins/etc. sent to my work. I still get a little nervous when I bring home an oversized package though... call me paranoid.
