Is that a die crack extending downward from the top of the helmet? If it is, then the first photo is not part of the progression. Chris
I checked the coin and it was a hair or spider web. I blew on it and it came right off. I'll post a new pic if wanted?
With no obvious stress concentration at the elbow, the probably came off an over-hardened die. Consequently, there may well be some examples with much more prolific cuds or cracking than you have here.
Concur, first photo does not appear to match the chips of the other coins. Look at the positioning below the A... first chip is too far to the east/right.
I see that now. If you look under the nose and chin there seems to be a familiarity between the dies!
I'm not sure if the third image is from the same die either. There are what appear to be two die chips in the field by the edge of the right brim of the hat that do not appear in the other later images.
I agree in the picture they do look like chips. I also looked through my collection and found an actual number 3. I'll have to post tomorrow. Not enough time today.
Ok the very first picture isn't part of the progression, SO let's remove that one. This new coin should be placed between the third and fourth coin making this one the third one in the progression.
Agreed, the face, and other parts have less definition than the others, suggesting different, similarly, worn dies. IMO
