The photo is kind of weird but I see the potential for this coin to be a monster in hand. Didn't win it btw but did bid on it. I was wondering if other collectors see what I saw and what the winning bidder saw. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Collectors-Toned-Unique-Morgan-Silver-Dollar-1884-O-New-Orleans-S6/113886040660?hash=item1a84231254%3Ag%3ACgkAAOSwv7BdA8kg&LH_Auction=1
No, I think it is incredibly unattractive. Those are really bad pictures of the obverse, because he's hoping someone buys it hoping it looks better in hand. I'm sure it does not. You can see hints of color in there, but that speckled, mottled, deep dark toning does not look pleasant. Even with good light, I'll bet its ugly.
Ick. I agree with this statement. It is mildly interesting with that one-sided toning but the toning itself, while it has hints of color, is totally lacking in eye appeal. One word sums up my opinion of that coin: ugly.
oh its a "Monster" alright. But the scary kind, not the colorful type. Sorry. But if you love it, than that's all that matters. There's a coin for everyone I say!
It might have been a monster about three degrees of toning, (corrosion) ago. Part of the problem with toned coins is they usually continue to tone. You have to be very protective to not let them progress.
The problem is, that toning is so thick and dark that dipping it leaves a good chance there is no luster remaining underneath. Then you'll have a dipped out lusterless ugly coin. There's no winning with this one, I think.
I agree with the sentiment stated above. Its got no eye appeal whatsoever. IMO you lucked out not winning the bid.
There are people who try to tell me that toned coins are not a hyped-up fad. The fact that this sold for a premium shows that there are many people who believe that toned=$$$ regardless of quality, which means it is a hyped-up fad.
