Was watching one of the coin roll hunting videos and I heard the guy mention of a type of error I hadn't heard before. One where the mint mark is inside the date area? Anyone know anything about that? Maybe it's something specific to a date or just in general? Can anyone elaborate?
Mint marks were hand punched onto the Die at one time. Some were clumsy strikes that were to close to the date even touching the date.
So, it's not just in the vicinity like below? but it's gotta be way up in there? touching a date or practically sandwiched between two of the numbers?
It can be high, low, left or right of its normal position. When punched by hand you get those rpm's as well. I saw a Cent once with the mintmark, a D, touching the 9 in 19?? I don't remember the year.
There is the famous Snow 1 variety of the 1897 Indian Head Cent... Apparently the die sinker wanted to check if the die had been softened before punching the date and used the neck area to test. Didn't quite get it placed properly and the base of the 1 hit the field. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1897-1c-1-neck-bn/92196
problem #1 .... watching YouTube videos from people making statements that do not show you the issue in question. It's like fishing stories ... they get more unbelieveable over time.
