I often sell coins when I upgrade, and sometimes because they are not quite good enough condition for my current collection. 95% are sold without any regrets. That still leaves quite a few mistakes, sometimes big mistakes. Here is one, I kept a photo: Incidentally the silver frame is hallmarked with a Concorde logo and I picked it up on a Concorde flight in 2003. I bought a few other knick-knacks on the same flight and when I was given the bag of goodies by the cabin crew it was heavier than expected: weighting the bag down was a bottle of Pol Roger 1986 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill. Which I have not yet opened. Nice flight. Too short. Any other regret sales that CT members would like to show us? (There's at least 2 items I really regret that are gonna get passed onto other collectors today, and a couple of others I shouldn't part with, so I guess am sticking with the 95% no-regrets figure).
Regret indeed! I'd love to have that Eid Mar... any Eid Mar. I'd love to know which ones they are... after the auction is over . (I don't want any more competition in case either coin is on my bid list ) I don't have many regrets primarily because I haven't sold many coins. I've given many away though and there is one regret, an Alexandrian dichalkon given away six years ago before I became an avid collector of that area.
I wondered if that was an EID MAR, but just couldn't tell. Now that it was mentioned, I can see the outline of the dagger on the right. Wow.
Life is too short to be clinging on to regrets. Look at the positive side...you have a collection that many here only dream of. Could you have done one or two things different? Sure! But that's peanuts compared to what you have achieved.
Thank you! Indeed one of the means of getting to the collection I have now has been by aggressive and regular pruning; the occasional good rose-bud is gonna be cut off in any pruning.

"Regret" is maybe the reason I hoard coins. I haven't looked at my US coins in about 20 years now, but refuse to sell in case my sons ever want them. So now I simply keep everything I buy. My main regrets are coins I didn't buy. Of those, I have many, but I simply repeat the mantra, "there is always another coin".
Andrew, your former EID MAR is my favourite 'regret' coin. Nice to see it again. I sold this chipped Domitian denarius several years ago and have regretted it very much ever since. The coin has several things going for it: A unique left variant, a detectorist find from the UK with the findspot logged, and Ex Harry Sneh. I doubt it will/can ever be replaced.
I've sold quite a few coins in the past 18 months, so I suppose I'm bound to have seller's remorse about at least a few of them. Thankfully, far more I miss, but am happy with the price I got for them. A few at the top of my mind: Second year Marcus Aurelius, nearly as struck. I got this and one other in the same Naumann lot, and decided to sell it. Only got like $60, which was an absolute steal for an XF like this. Eastern Celts "Sattelkopf" type Philip II tetradrachm, sold for some horrendously low price Archaic Kyzikos obol, one of just a handful known, sold way too cheap An apparently unique and unpublished Cilician hemiobol, sold for something like $25? I probably regret this one most of all.... Some others I miss, but honestly can't complain about the price... Himera AR Litra Kebren hemitartemorion Unattributed Cilician satrap And I can't find the photos in my archives, but in a Leu lot I purchased about a year ago, I had an Alexander the Great hemidrachm and obol. Silly me thought it would be a grand idea to make a lot and list an Alexander Tetradrachm, Drachm, Hemidrachm, Obol, and some AEs all together as a lot. It wasn't. I hope you at least do well on the sale today, @Andrew McCabe !
I don't have any serious selling regrets so far largely because I force myself to spend a long time with the coin on my desk staring at me every day before I list anything for sale unless there are exigent circumstances (i.e. the recent thread about upgrading my Pentagram Victoriatus where I needed money quickly and the new coin was a double die match to the old). If anything I regret not bidding higher and more aggressively on a handful of very special coins here and there. I keep a file with notes about who bought each of these coins and for how much and hope to get a second chance one of these days. In the past year I've bought less coins than in the preceding years but I've also added less coins to my regret list, having taken on a more aggressive bidding strategy on the truly special coins and trying to bid less aggressively on ultimately replaceable coins so I can save money for the ones that require crazy bids.
There isn’t enough space on this Forum for me to report all of the regrets I have in selling (and trading) coins and, as general interest, historical arms & accoutrements and Japanese Samurai swords.
LM, that is just one BEAUTIFUL 10 Centimes !!! I can certainly understand why you would regret selling it.
Now that the auction is over I'd be very interested to hear as well. There were a lot of really special coins in this sale in my opinion, most of the ones I wanted picked up by a handful of familiar bidders(as I expected). I did pick up one coin I really wanted which made one of the coins on my "regret list" mentioned above sting just a little less but that story will have to wait a bit for the coin to arrive.
I think I am about to regret sending a coin for auction. I sent one recently and when I looked it up on the auction I could not believe that it was my coin. The photograph makes it look absolutely horrible. I suspect that it will be lucky to get a bid and it might be better if it doesn't.
