I have this coin and I know it’s worth good money so I took it to a reputable coin dealer here in Vegas where I live. He said because it was Incased in a jewelry pice, the price of the coin significantly drops as well as its potential value. The coin is not graded. He offered me $240 for it. But I rejected with a gut feeling to just keep it. 2 days later I listed it on eBay for $2450 just it see if I got a bite- and someone sent a buy offer for $2300.
Now I am contemplating that it could be worth more than was told from the coin dealer and he was trying to play me. Should I cut it out and send it in for grading to PCGS, is it worth to do so , or should I accept the eBay offer. I want to make the smart choice that could yield me the most in return for it , but it’s hard to know when I get conflicting offers that are that huge in difference. I know this coin if graded a MS65 or higher is worth way more than $2300. Here are some pics. Please any suggestions, comments or ideas. Much appreciated. Thank you

This coin alone is worth less than the dealer's offer, forget what you have been offered on eBay.

However, if - and this is a big IF - the eBay "offerer" recognizes the hallmark on the tie bar as being Tiffany or some other prized jeweler, it's possible that the dealer's offer is way too little.

I think you have a bit more research to do.

So Why wouldn’t I accept a $2300 offer on it if you say the coin is worth less than what the dealer offered? I’d be a fool not to take it. I’m confused by your comment. You said forget the eBay offer. Please explain.

It’s a figure of speech, like “let alone what you’ve been offered on eBay”.

Most importantly,I was speaking to the value of the coin in particular in that sentence.

Still, I think you owe it to the potential eBay buyer to make sure the $2300 offer is not a typo or unfair to him or her.

A 1914 quarter eagle isn’t the rate date of the series. Most quarter eagles can be had in the $300.00 range. And yours having been a jewelry piece will be damaged. No way around that. I think what @ToughCOINS is getting at is if you were made a $2300.00 offer, perhaps the value may be in the tie clip because it is not in the coin.

Did you weigh the tie clip, did your dealer offer you the $240.00 for the coin by itself? Is the tie clip a designer piece?

OK so now you know the coin is just an average coin, not of great value, and likely damaged by the bezel removing collector value. And reducing the coin to around melt value. That's a good first step in my opinion your next step is to get an appraisal from a jeweler see if they know anything on it from the hallmarks, and check an antiques shop and see if they know anything.

If the tie bar (that's what its called, not a clip) itself was made by a desirable maker or its vintage hand crafted, it could have collector value as men's jewelry.

I'm not sure but the design on the tie bar, the hatch marks, don't look machine done to me and look hand done which would suggest an older piece. I'm not a professional and I'm going by the picture of course. But someone offered you $2300 on ebay and may be more knowledgeable than you and willing to gamble $2300 on a coin in a tie bar piece that the coin worth a couple hundred tops for some reason, it's got to be the tie bar itself.

It may have more value than $2300 is what I'm saying but you may need to have it checked in multiple places, 2nd 3rd and 4th opinions and appraisals to feel better about it and confident you aren't lowballing yourself.

If it's not what the eBay buyer is expecting I'll guarantee you they file a return complaint and get their money back from PayPal or ebay or whatever. And may be trying to pick it up on the cheap from you not knowing what it is.

It's a really nice tie bar! Good luck!

Great info. Thanks a lot for you opinion. I will definitely go around to some reputable jewelers and see what they think. I might get lucky and find someone who knows about what I got here.
    Thanks again.

You can't buy at the bottom and you can't sell at the top. If you want to see it be happy with the sales price.

If your ball is on the green, and it's another player's turn to putt, you pick up your ball to get it out of the way, leaving a little coin or token where it was as a marker to quickly relocate that spot. There's a certain order that golfers usually follow, re: who gets to putt in what order. As a further aside to this aside, please don't mistake me for a golfer, although I have an interesting golf marker token, bronze and about the size of a silver thruppence coin. It's from the 1942 British War Relief Society Golf Tournament and is identically-struck on both sides. If I had appropriate camera equip't, I'd be happy to use this space to flaunt it! How's this rate as an aside-of-another-aside?!!
Coin Corgi; you've learned something, evidently new to you about tokens! Cheers.

Nothing, the F is next to the G on the keyboard. A typo. If the op is like me the fingers are too big for the keys.

I wouldn't trust "potential" on ebay. The buyer may turn out to be a scammer, as in, after you accept the offer, the buyer then tells you they will send you $5,000 and you send them the difference back in cash and keep the piece until they can arrange someone to pick it up from you directly. Or....maybe I'm wrong and it's lagit. Just beware.
