    Hello eveyone!

I acquired a draped bust half at an estate sale this weekend. I payed a bit over $100 for it. I wanted to find out what everyone think it's worth.

Note: There is a bit of faint graffiti on the reverse. Additionally, there is a die crack at around 2 O'clock. Finally, although it's hard to tell from the picture, this coin has near full shield lines.

    Thanks!

Without the damage the coin would be about $200. With the damage, $100 sounds about right.

Sure.... It is born of one of Coin-Talk’s more favored members. He is a moderator here and well regarded in the overall numismatic community, Lord Marcovan. It is an acronym for “circulated cameo”.... It describes an honest circulated coin that has developed a grayish hue that makes the devices or the image of the coin really pop. I have one example below. Not all coins attain this sort of honest beauty. Yours is a lovely example of the circ-Cam look.

I would have too. I am one of those old fashioned collectors that isn’t so fussy about the technical aspect of collecting. If the coin is pleasing to my eye (and yours is), then I am a buyer. I think you found a lovely coin there.

Graffiti or no, that is a handsome coin, a solid black-and-white CircCam, and a no-brainer in the ~$100s.

@Randy Abercrombie - oh! That Lafayette! I want it! ;)

That’s an attractive piece and ~$100 seems quite fair. Almost looks like someone was scratching tears onto Lady Liberty.

Random tooling is one of those weird things... it’s interesting to imagine who did that... when, and why. Neat coin with a great CircCam look as mentioned. :)

    Welcome to CoinTalk @BryceS

The badly broken reverse die also adds interest for some...see what's going on in the O in OF, the top of the I in UNITED is broken, with the crack continuing along the top of ITED, etc. The Overton number (or die marriage) is O-118a. So it's rated an R.3 ("Scarce", 201 - 500 examples existing today.)

Thank you for the information. I looked up that variety online and compared it to my coin. I didn't notice the die crack in the top of the ITED until you pointed it out. However, it is definitely there. I am certainly not an expert, but do you believe that this coin being a variety would increase its value?

okbustchaser I may be old but I still appreciate a pretty bust Supporter

It's not a variety, per say. The Overton number refers to the die marriage and all early bust halves have one. The R-3 rating gives no premium to the coin.

Edit to add: At $100.00 I think you did very well.

Being new to collecting, that sounds like quite a purchase for a newbie! You are setting your sites high. Now if you can only collect a string of 'em, your collection will shine bright for a long long time. Can't wait to hear how your collection grows. Maybe while you're at it, try pick up a 1830 large lettered cape or an 1853-O for your collection.

    Thanks for the response!

I've been collecting for around a year now. I started off by collecting coins mostly from the early 1900's. However, I love the design of both the capped bust and draped bust coins. I'm still 16 years old, but over the next few years I'll try to add more awesome coins to my collection.

After looking back at my collection, there is little I would have changed. You're headed in the right direction for collecting. Pick a thread, build on it and add what you can as side collections. Get known for searching out quality coins and you simply won't regret it. Enjoy your collecting. I know I have.
