I'm a sucker for the middle bronze struck by Titus as Augustus. When I recently came across this attractive piece all resistance was futile. Titus Æ As, 10.39g Rome mint, 80-81 AD RIC 248 (C). BMC 217. BNF 222. Obv: IMP T CAES VESP AVG P M TR P COS VIII; Head of Titus, laureate, bearded, r. Rev: VICTORIA AVGVST; S C in field; Victory stg. r. on prow, with wreath and palm Acquired from eBay, September 2019. A fairly common As struck in Titus' large second issue of bronze in 80-81. Because Titus did not take up the consulship in 81, the issue cannot be dated more precisely. The Victory on prow is a carry-over type from the coinage of Vespasian, who in turn borrowed it from the coinage of Augustus. It is a fairly popular generic design symbolising the emperor's military successes. The prow lends it a nautical theme, perhaps alluding to a successful ongoing Flavian naval policy. This is really a nice piece in hand, which the photo does not capture very well. Post your common but attractive coins!
I like your new coin. Looks like a lovely bronze. Here is my only Titus, a budget friendly silver Denarius
Now, if you're going to have just one Titus denarius, make it a rare one. Your coin is RIC 692 (Vespasian), RIC frequency rating rare. It's an obverse die match with my own example. Superb coin!
I'm a sucker for common but attractive bronzes. Here are a couple of recently-acquired common but pretties:
Here’s my common but attractive bronze of Titus. Titus, As, Lugdunum, (28mm, 8.51g), Laureate head right, globe at point of bust / Spes advancing left, holding flower and raising hem of skirt. RIC II 1273 (Vespasian).
Domitian with issues, but at $5.50 it seemed reasonable. Domitian Æ As (85 A.D.) Rome Mint IMP CAES DOMITIAN AVG GERM COS XI, laureate bust right, wearing aegis / SALVTI AVGVSTI above and beneath façade of Ara Salutis Augusti with horns above, S-C. RIC 305; BMCRE 316-317. (10.94 grams / 28 mm)
Nice lookin' new Titus AE you got there @David Atherton ! This common denarius of Titus is pretty sweet if I don't say so myself! O:T CAESAR IMP VESPASIANVS; Laureate head right; R:COS V; Eagle on cippus, head left. 15x18 mm, 3.5 g RIC II Rome 872
