So I've got a penny that is probably a large date but its a littlesmooshed down it looks like. Most all 1982 large dates sorta look a little smooshed anyways to me lol but the reason im questioning it more this time is because in addition to that, it looks like a DDR. From what ive heard and seen about the very rare 1982 small date DDR is that because of the class of doubling, it can be seen mostly on the "E Pluribus Unum" and less noticed on all the lettering closer out to the rim. This penny seems alot like that to but its not in the best shape which makes it a little harder to tell. There looks like there might be some doubling on the obverse side as well and i could be wrong nut it looked like maybe just machine doubling? Last thing though is that the famous rare DDR penny I mentioned above is zinc but this one weighs in at 3.08 so its obviously copper. Lol, im stumped. Can someone help me with any advice please?
That is a Large Date. Also, its not a DD. Its DDD (Die Deterioration Doubling) struck from a worn die. And some damaged too.
If you haven’t visited coppercoins.com, you may want to check it out. It supports Lincoln variety hunting rather well. You should also give doubleddie.com a look to. Two things at that site: background on the various types of doubled dies and a list of attributions by date/denominations. Learning how the variety of choice is created will help you with your diagnostic. Wexler also gives explanations about false doubling and how to tell the difference. As a newbie to variety hunting, go slow and ask questions. At the start I tossed back actual finds as I wasn’t sure. And you may want to put your au/ms coins aside for awhile. As you grow your knowledge you’ll want a hoard of higher state coins to variety hunt in. You will have them as I didn’t; I was in too much of a hurry to return them to the bank.
