And why would these not be valid? Hardly anybody handling money knows what metals they are made out of.

Counterfeit. Look at the bust of Washington - he has a clown nose.

Plated coins are a gimmick. You can find them all over eBay. Waste of a good coin and not worth your money.

Maybe in the picture due to how the light is hitting it, but I'm looking at the actual coin and comparing it to a real one up close in my hand under magnification and there is no difference at all.

There are those who value them as people buy them. It's a obviously novelty item.

I can't tell from these photos. It could be lighting.

Has anyone asked whether it sticks to a magnet?

I had found a 65 dime that was silver in color and got my hopes up. What I did was scrape the edge with a razor blade edge """CAREFULLY"" between the reedings until either I saw copper, or not.

Turns out I saw copper underneath and the silver plating was coming off.

So that solved that problem without additional costs and I knew 100% that it was plated and not a transitional error. Worst case it was what I thought it was and I did minimal damage on the edge in the reeding where it would be the least visible.

But it wasn't, it was plated.

    Good idea! Thanks!

I just tried it. I don't see anything underneath - no copper. I think these platinum quarters they issue may also just be counterfeit. I'm going to throw it back into circulation, let someone else deal with it. I spent way too much time on something worthless already! :eek:o_O

I don't think the magnet test is relevant, as the plating metal could have magnetic elements.
    It's not counterfeit. It's a quarter.
If you thought it was counterfeit then you can't knowingly put it back into circulation.

Okay, so, it's not counterfeit. But I'm not interested in dealing with it anymore.

I have a couple of gold plated South Dakota quarters that I kept, cause they look cool. Even though your plated quarter is only worth a quarter they do sell for .50-$1.

you can buy them today gold plated, platinum plated, etc. as novelty to take money from people that don't know any better. Of course, it's always worth face value. Or maybe more to someone that thinks it's "neat to own".

but these are not sold by the "US MINT".

They are sold by other "Mints". So do not confuse that. There are numerous "Mints" out there taking US coinage and doing various damage/plating to them and reselling to the public for profit.

from the previous furham post that showed it ..

also check out merrickmint sometime .... vast quantities of nearly every coin being plated with one metal or another, plus painted coins, stickers, etc etc.
