I decided to try that on-approval thing. First, it took two weeks to get my order, I got the on-approval coins with it. then, they didn't mail the right address label and mailer to mail the coins back to them. Then, after three weeks, I finally get the right address label and mailer, and mail it out. Now, today, I got a letter saying I owe them $45.10 for the on approval service. I called them up, and after about 5 minutes of the lady arguing with me saying I did owe the money, she says "Oh, I was looking at the wrong thing, you don't owe us anything." she didn't even say she was sorry...... so much for her being hostile. Do they honestly expect to sell anything with there high prices and poor customer service? How are they in business still? stainless
They are in business because they advertise to the non collector/beginning collector (Sunday coupon section and other places) that does not know any better. They see these "deals" and then send in a check. They get the coins on approval and now this is my guess/opinion, people say, "hey these are nice and now I have them so I will mail them another check". To be fair, my understanding is that you may overpay, but you will not get junk/cleaned/whizzed stuff, etc
Yep... nothing wrong with what they sell, except for the fact they charge too much for it. Well and as noted, the bad customer service lol...
Stainless - do you remember me telling you about my Franklin set that my dad put together for me? Well, he was suckered in by Littleton. He wanted to complete the set for me - which he did - but at a staggering cost that was way above market for these circ coins. He thought he was getting AU or UNC coins. He just didn't know. So now I have a complete set of circ Franklin's that I am slowly replacing with BU examples. Now, i will say this, some of my first coins that I got as a kid, I bought from Littleton - even much of my stamp collection was purchased from them. It was the only thing available to me at the time. I don't think I have those coins anymore though. If fact I was telling Deadmunny that my coin shop owner was sending all his UNC Morgans to Littleton. They were paying more than he could sell them for in the store. They are buying up anything and everything and turning around and selling them for a premium. Isn't that the American way? :goof: Sorry about your experience.
LOL......I thought about it, but I can't seem to ever help myself when I have $ to spend on coins..plus, in this case, I got a free coin. you live you learn..... stainless
:smile I guess that is the American way, but they should at least have better ccustomer service....They do have some nice coins, but I'm not paying $33 for a ASE... I remember you telling me that story, but hey, at least you have a whole set:kewl:, it was from your dad, so it probobly has some sentimental value, if not, then you can just sell them when you get your BU's:smile ttyl, Stainless
Littleton does tend to sell at outrageous prices to the uninformed. As others have stated they usually are accurately graded, no problem coins. They also pay top dollar to dealers. My boss/dealer has sold to them on many occasions. They are very picky and will send a lot of stuff back. He sells to them in bulk. This being the case they are paying people to sort through all of this stuff. I do a lot of this at the shop when stuff rolls in and believe me it's a painstaking process. Bigger lots we just "eyeball". Not enough time actually. One other thing my boss has run into. They are SLOW to pay the dealers they buy from. They are a huge company with a lot of money. $10,000 worth of coins sitting is nothing to them. For average dealers it can mean a lot more. clembo
