I have a suspicion that this coin would come back as "cleaned" from the TPGs, but I'm not 100% sure and so wanted to get some other opinions. It really looks great in hand and it has pretty nice details, but once magnification gets applied, well, that's a different story. I've included some closeups from a scope below the full coin pictures. Opinions? Thoughts?
I think the coin shows an old cleaning. Is it market acceptable? That's borderline. You can try it, but don't be disappointed, if you get a details grade. Otherwise the coin shows good details and especially obverse eye appeal. Wait on the specialists for more information.
I think it's probably been dipped or cleaned at some point in the past, but I think it looks market acceptable. I think it has high EF sharpness, and might make AU. In AU, the NGC guide has it at $265, but recent auction trends have it more like $180. At that price, I'd have to think *really* hard if it was worth it to submit for grading. Unless there was a strong reason for me to, I wouldn't.
You'll net less for the coin if you pay to have it graded, and I don't think it will be any more marketable in a slab. I'd keep it raw.
I don't think that coin will get a straight grade. It has hairlines and rubbing marks all over it with darker spots when the cloth, brush or whatever could not get to the surfaces. It's been cleaned pretty severely.
Part of me thinks the coin has been etched to enhance some details, But otherwise I just think it looks funky, and not with grading most likely
