Hi all! I just purchased a standing liberty for my type set. It has some interesting toning that I actually kind of like....gives it character. I am wondering if it affects the value. What are your opinions on grade and value?

    thanks,
    John

    VF

"toning" looks more like grease or something, so it detracts from value.

Looking at the pics I see it as a near full head example. Some rub on the high spots puts it at an Au-58 for me. I too think that the toning gives it character. I like it. Very nice original coin IMO. John

I copied the picture and inverted the color and now I'm not so sure what I saw was wear.. The coin looks unc under the toning. I'll have to bump it up to an MS 62-63 . Again, JMHO. John

wow! from VF - AU/BU! thanks for the input! The seller listed the coin as XF, but I thought it looked a little better myself, though Im not experienced in grading these. The head is also really nice imo compared to other AU quarters I've seen that suffer from "flat head". But I do see weakness in the eagle's background wing, and the shield and other areas as well. I would have attributed it to wear, but do you think it is strike weakness dready?

How much do you think I paid for it? Value estimate?

    thanks,
    John

I would say $15? That may be a little low!

maybe I'm a bit harsh with VF, it was meant more as XF detail minus ugly toning/ blemish = net VF coin.

I'd want a discount off of XF price.

I guess it depends on the person. To me, the toning actually adds appeal. As long as its natural and is not damaging to the coin, I would actually pay more for it. I'm a big fan of rainbow toned coins, though I only have one.

rzage What Goes Around Comes Around .

Most type II SLQ often come with weak strikes.flat head not all rivets on shield, thats why SLQ collecters pay premiums for full head ,& well struck shield. As for grade AU-55. rzage Cost I say 75.00 Your coin is way nicer tan the coin on E-BAY, nice find, from the second picture maybe MS -61 If you want to compare coins graded by the top 3rd party graders go to Heritage at HA.COM , they have every type of coin with the best photography.

I would say a solid xf-45 maybe au-50, depends if that black crud comes off. I would say that it is not toning. The overall eye apeal of the coin is poor and you won't get the grade your looking for, eye appeal is very important.

Yeah. I think the eye appeal is in the eye of the beholder, but I agree that most people will not like the look of this quarter, therefore that may affect its value if I decide to sell. I just happen to like it...and not just because it's mine  I dont have the coin in hand yet, as these are pics from ebay. I guess most people would think it has poor eye appeal, because I picked it up for $14 including s&h.

SLQ's are not an easily graded coin. You have to know a little about them. Guys calling it unc may be crazy but a guy that calls it vf is Blind (IMO). Nice coin at a nice price. John
