When Galerius died in 311AD there were four men calling themselves Emperors - Licinius I in Asia, Maximinus Daia in Egypt, Maxentius at Rome, and Constantine in Gaul. Valerius Licinianus Licinius served as Caesar (he was raised at the age of 20 months ) in the eastern empire from 317 to 324 A.D while his father was Augustus Licinius I. The mother of Licinius II was Flavia Julia Constantia, the sister of the Emperor Constantine the Great. His father constantly fought against his co emperor Constantine the Great and was finally defeated by Constantine at Chrysopolis on 18 September 324. Licinius I abdicated but was eventually put to death by hanging in 325. It is believed that his father had attempted yet another rebellion against Constantine the Great as an ally of the Goths. Licinius II was executed AD 327 at Pola. He was 11 years old... This is the first Licinius The younger in my collection : Licinius II Ae Follis 21 mm. 3.42g. Cyzicus DN VAL LICIN LICINIVS NOB C IOVI CONSERVATORI Jupiter st.left, hold. Victory & sceptre, eagle before, captive behind And if you really like this « emperor », you can find on itunes a music group called DEATH OF LICINIUS II. It is in the Trash Metal category..... Please show me your own example of Licinius the younger.
Nice one! I like that portrait style. Here's a IOVI CONSERVATORI CAESS in the "looks better in hand" category: Licinius II, Caesar, AD 317-324 Roman Æ follis; 17.55 mm; 3.36 gm Antioch, AD 317-318 Obv: D N VAL LICIN LICINIVS NOB C, laureate bust, left, holding mappa in the r. hand and globe and scepter in l. Nice little write-up and nice Follis, @Ocatarinetabellatchitchix . Sad story. 11. I have grandkids that are 11. This is why I am not a big fan of the later Empire. RI Licinius II 317-324 CE Folles Jupiter w Eagle sinister left Antioch

Licinius II is not the favorite ruler of anyone I know. That is not all bad. His coins are therefore less expensive than they might be. One could try for a type set. Get RIC VII and list his types (or Failmezger's good book) and then pick them off. Here is one of the scarcer types, only from Thessaloncia. 18 mm. LICINIVS IVN NOB CAES VOT V MVLT X CAESS TS•Є RIC VII Thessalonica 42, struck "318-9." Failmezger 321. It would be possible and interesting to collect the vota types of the mint of Thessaloncia in this period. It is the only mint making a series of vota types, much like this one, for all the rulers at the time.
Here are some more tiny hands for you: Licinius II, Roman Empire, AE3, 317–320 AD, Antioch mint. Obv: DN VAL LICIN LICINIVS NOB C, laureate and draped bust left, holding mappa, globe, and sceptre. Great coin! They really seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel with those metal band names though. LICINIUS II AE Follis. 2.0g, 21.5mm. Cyzicus mint, AD 321-324. RIC VII Cyzicus 18 (R1). O: DN VAL LICIN LICINIVS NOB C, helmeted, cuirassed bust left, spear in right hand over shoulder, shield on left shoulder. Nice one @Ocatarinetabellatchitchix ! Here's my one and only example. Strange how this cheeky young lad also looks quite old on this portrait at the same time : Licinius II, AE3 Nicomedia mint, 4th officina, AD 317-318 D N VAL LICIN LICINIVS NOB C, draped and diademed bust right PROVIDENTIA CAESS, Jupiter standing left, holding victory and sceptre, palm at his feet, dot and Δ in right field. Superb coin @Severus Alexander . Never seen a Licinius II with so many details. About the eagle, do you really think it’s an ankh symbol or is it simply holding a wreath ?
I was the underbidder of this one in the Naumann auction last weekend. I knew it was missing from your set, and the thought occurred that if I won it, it would have made for a nice early Christmas present to you. Unfortunately, someone else had other ideas...
