    Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to get your thoughts on these coins.
I picked the 1878 up a couple of months ago at the Bay State Coin Show. I know it has several heavy hits on the rim and some pretty heavy bag marks.

    What can I say?
You know about the 1st one, and the '81 O looks cleaned.

What about the 81-0 makes it look cleaned?
    Thanks

Your pictures are not showing any luster - the surfaces on the 81-O look flat, almost pitted. It could be the picture. Everything looks okay on the first picture - at least in my opinion.

    Cool coins!

The surfaces on the 81-O look somewhat porous which leads me to think it is either harshly cleaned or poorly whizzed.

no question in regard to the 81-o being cleaned. the surfaces and color tell the tale completely. still morgan dollars tho...thanks for sharing.

I subscribe to the opinion that the 1881-O is whizzed.

I would say that the first coin is a low AU that has been cleaned and has the marks that were mentioned.

The 1881-O looks like an AU-55/58 coin that was severely overdipped to make it look smooth. That is why the surfaces look smooth and evenly colored at first glance, but have many marks upon examination.
