Grade or condition for this coin

    I have a 1940 S quarter and wondering what is the grade for this coin ?

    That appears to be quite a nice specimen. I would like to defer to @Skyman if he has a second to give this one a look.

    Yeah, 65 seems safe for this one.

    I would agree with the MS65 grades stated above. The reverse appears to easily be a 66, on a good day a 67, but the obverse limits the coin. The nicks in the chin, neck and ding on obverse field around 2 o'clock limit the coin. At best a 65 on the obverse, on a bad day, depending on the ding at 2 o'clock in the obverse field, a 64.

    Not worth slabbing, as a PCGS MS65 is theoretically $50, and you'd get less than that when trying to sell it. Basically PCGS would make any money on this coin that is worthwhile making if you slabbed it.

    It looks MS65 minimum from the luster and surfaces shown in the photo. We would need better photos that show the surfaces better in order to go higher.

    That's why I limited myself to MS65.

    The circular scratch in back of Washington’s head takes it out of the MS-65 level unless the grader ignores it and on the luster.
