Question folks: When you dump coins how do they take them? Loose, rolled, through machines? I'm guessing each bank is different and best is to ask them to get in their "good graces". I know coin machines in banks are becoming extinct. Just tired of Coinstar charging 11% and annoying everyone in the store with my half hour of chink chink chinkin lol. So how exactly do you all dump your coins. Tks for your time. This has been my go-to forum. Happy Hunting!
The banks I do business with will not take a large amount of coins without them being wrapped and the account number written on the outside of the role. TD Bank used to let you dump your coins in their machines but I'm fairly certain that they now require you to have an account with them. (Don't know if that applies to all TD Banks).
Two of my bank’s require rolling. Three have coin counting machines that are free to account holders, one is my dump bank.
No machines. They will provide flat pepper wrappers. You count, you roll. I don't use them but some banks require you to put your name and phone number on the roll.
No machine. That's why I only save quarters. Never thought of it but I have to look into buying a coin counter/rolling machine.
Wow. Coin counters sound the easiest. I'll have to find out which of my banks do what. The thought of self rolling sounds like lot of work if your dumping hundreds of dollars at a time. Tks people great feedback!
If i'm quarter roll searching I roll as I go. I search 1 roll at a time. I keep a "replacement roll" handy and if I keep something out of the roll I'm searching, I replace it from the replacement roll. When done searching that roll I re roll it and go onto the next. I use 2 dump banks. The one we use at work and a specific branch of my Credit Union. I always put a little black mark on my rolls, so if I go to the work bank to by change for the cashiers, I can tell if we get one of the rolls I've searched already. Both banks take my rolled change with no muss or fuss.
I never count before return dump. I weigh each roll and adjust accordingly. I take out the foreign coins as I search and of course silver. The US nickels, dimes, and quarters are extremely uniform in weight and you’ll be surprised when you try it. Can even do cents if you separate the copper. I don’t usually search cents, but when I do, my Credit Union 2 miles away has counting machine free for depositors. My $50 account balance there allows access to boxes of all denominations also.
This is becoming a good thread. Just don't hear any discussions on the mechanics of dumping. You guys are "rolling" now lol.
I make the choice of always including a smaller community bank in choices. Most of them do not have additional staff, so they provide the machines for bulk dumping as a courtesy to their account holders and at an additional cost to non-accounts. Also, they usually know who you are when you walk in the door and might even help you with your 'addiction' of collecting.
I used to roll them but I found out a credit union here has Coinstar machines in their branches. They are free for account holders. I have four branches I can go to dump my coins. Much easier!
My local bank will take loose bags of coins, Count them later and apply the credit to my account by the next day . Last deposit was around $365. Citibank wants rolls. With TD you can run the coins through the machine yourself for free if you have an account . But TD has limited locations On the East Coast. In the end I found my local bank to be the best.
Coin roll hunting is easy. You open one roll at a time. You have a replacement roll. When you take one coin out to keep you put one going back in. Simple.
I was rolling up and dumping at Chas neAR me. The branch manager started meeting me at the door and told me they wouldn't accept them anymore from me. Anyways I started looking around and found my credit unon had a branch that has a counting machine free to members at some branches and I've been dumping there ever since without any issue except people break them sometimes. No more counting and rolling for me anymore and no more buying coin wrappers. This is the best way to do it at the lowest cost.
I use both TD & Chase to dump. Both banks have been incredibly generous handing out empty coin wrappers. Never once said they were limiting my request.
