Hi all, I did a 3 hour detecting hunt Friday evening and 3 more hours this Saturday morning. This is a neat Dime Spill This is a GERBER Dime! (I bet you were thinking it was an actual coin ) Website pictures -
Sad to see that dial at the top right -- wonder if the rest of the camera it came off of is somewhere nearby?
Great hunting , Paddy, I use to hunt everyday but eschewed saltwater, due to it's usual effect on silver coins. I have 2 Tesoro Golden Sabres languishing in the corner, sans batteries, of coarse! I use to hunt H.U.D. houses and any open lots in downtown Houston. My best find(s) were on a downtown vacant lot at the corner of Louisiana & Benz St., while on my way to the large liquor store (Spec's on Smith St.) I stopped at this vacant lot, just a few blocks from my destination and immediately started finding 5¢ TIME CHECK brass octagonal tokens from an old East TX log mill ghost town @ about 4-6" deep. They were Brass & marked "Gebhart-Williams-Fenet , Carolina Texas. I ended up finding a 'spill' of about 12, all in mixed condition (F-XF) but all toned dark brown & obviously they'd been in the ground many years. After doing a bit of research I contacted a few Token collectors, who went absolutely NUTS over these octagonal pieces. One actually traded me a roll of Mercury dimes for 1 token. Seems that no one had ever heard of this company, much less their tokens. All in all, I went back to this lot several times and always found 4 or more 5¢ Time Checks, finally digging the big rarity a 50¢ Carolina Tx. piece. This was almost 30 years ago when finances were rather thin for me, so all tokens were eventually sold off to collectors & must have made $3-400 bucks that really helped w/ the bills at that time. Sorry for this long token-ramble, but one thing I learned was that Token Collectors are the most , if not one of the most, serious & voracious collector groups out there! Just my, Good For, J.T.
Paddy you really do find some pretty awesome stuff in your outings. All I have been finding is old beer tabs and severely rotted zincolns this year.
Yes just four lol two nickels two dimes. And again great finds! It's a hit and miss for me. Maybe i just have a cheaper metal detector. But it does find stuff though. I got to save up for a better one one day.
