Is there such a thing as an original roll of Morgan dollars, anymore ?

During the run of the treasury back in 1963 - 64 there actually were at least a few bags of liberty seated dollars that turned up. At least one bag each of 1859-O and 1860-O dollars and possibly a second one of one or both. There may have also been a bag of 1871. There have been rumours that a few more bags may have been found and are still intact.

Reading through this thread, maybe I got light headed thinking about the possibility of buying a truly unopened bag of dollars and skipped over the answer. Was this ever answered - when did banks start rolling dollars?

    I'm wondering as well.
I'll do a bit of looking.

    Mark,

The reason that you an others never see any Mint bags of Morgan Silver Dollars at Coin Shows, is because these are usely only traded or sold between Coin Dealers and not offered to the public...except upon request! The next time that you attend a Coin Show, go to each table and ask if they have any Mint bags of Morgans or know of any Coin Dealers that does. Eventually, you should be able to find a Coin Dealer that has one or more bags!

I don't think the question was ever answered. And now I'm getting very curious as well...

I'm pretty confident that rolls offered as original, are not rolls made from bags as they came. They (IMO) are the rejects ( MS60-63) remains of former picked over rolls, made into new rolls. One would certainly cherrypick any gems first, since the rolls are not sealed to start with.

I believe in 1980 some original bags of stuff like 1922-4 Peace dollars were melted, maybe Morgans as well.

I don't think you could trust any silver dollar roll to be not picked over.

If you even had a" sealed" bag available, how would you know what year the coins in the bag were ?

I'd also think you'd want to store it in tubes or something instead of a bag. Wouldn't damage occur moving the bag ?

Yeah. I would assume that any time you moved the bag you would cause some new bag marks to occur.

I could see a bag of wheat cents or junk silver, but not BU Morgans.

they are probably out there...surprisingly, people will hoard many things..especially when they would rather have the item than dollars. i have heard stories of people spot examining a bag by burning a cigarette hole in a bag and looking for dates...i would imagine many more bagmatks will occur every time the coins are shuffled around.

I'd lay that bag on something like a dining room table padded with towels, carefully cut it open, and probably staple every coin into 2X2's and box them ( or at least tube them), then pick out any coins that I thought had a chance of making ms-65 ( in other words at least ms-64's).

I then might offer "original" rolls on ebay ( I know, not totally ethical). At best I think that is a roll you could buy nowadays.

No way I keep it bagged.... you could have an ms-67 in there, and get a big hit on the cheek moving it.

    Aren't these bags a big unknown ?

Couldn't they contain almost anything from circ coins to BU solid date entire bag ?

Yes they are, and that's usually why they stay right in the bag. It's like the "Unopened" Proof sets or "Unopened" Mint sets, or Mint rolls on ebay - they always sell for more now don't they.

Why ? Because people like to gamble. Something about the unknown intrigues them. They simply can't resist buying something when there is chance, no matter how slight, that they might find a treasure inside.

The story is as old as people themselves - it's better known as buying a pig in a poke. Get's 'em every time.

Someplace in a book there is an answer - just don't know what book. My guess would be early 1900's as Conder mentioned - but it's still just a guess.

I'd consider the bag to be too risky to buy. How can you even call it a bag of say BU 1881-s dollars, buy burning a hole and seeing one ?

I cringe at the thought of new bagmarks everytime the bag is moved.

I know personally of a bag of 1892-O Morgan Dollars that showed up in my area in the early 1960s. The owner still has them squirreled away and will not sell them.

There are still bags of Morgans tucked away....maybe even some better date bags.
