I'm looking at the April 28 issue of coinworld. Q. David Bowers' column on page 20 is about 1829 half dimes. It repeatedly says "Seated Liberty half dime" But the coin pictured is a bust half dime, not a seated. And right off the top of my head, I don't think seated coins were issued untill the late 1830's. So, has someone seen this? Did the magazine make an error, or have I just had 2 too many anheuser-busch products. Thanks.
Thanks. I just checked my '08 redbook, and found the same answer. So apparently there was no such thing as seated liberty coinage in 1829...
Bowers is a fraud!!!!11!!!1 he sits across from me at the Baltimore show - I'll ask him about it in June -Steve
typo............. i don't think the man is a fraud at all! i do think that coinworld was in error and has stated such in the latest copy.
grizz: Nice comment. I agreed. Dave Bowers is a gentleman, I met him in Milwaukee and he spoke to me for a bit. The error was in the title of the picture, no biggie, it isn't like it was in his column.
wow. ::shakes head:: i guess you missed the numerous exclamation points and intermixed number ones - that is an internet MEME that means this is not a serious comment and is supposed to be taken as a very over the top comment. kind of misses it's effect if one has to spell it out. and then there's the wink emoticon. welcome to the internet, conveying inflection is difficult. and he really does sit across from me - i'm at booth 1000, except in June - no table - too close to ANA. -Steve
Wondering the same thing too. I just the thougt the 1's interchanged with the "!" was when your finger fell off the shift key. BTW, I knew you weren't serious by the winky emoticon. I thought that was evident too. But shame on you for even saying what you did...... David Bowers is a great man and should not be treated with such disrespect. How's that.
Actually Frank, it was in the column too. Anyway, no big deal. I was mainly just wondering if anyone else had caught it.
It's a word you use to rub your smug sense of self-superiority in other's faces. Or, maybe he meant "meme" which means "an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture" from Merriam-Webster.
wait, i thought having a vocabulary that is filled with a variety of words showed i had an education. so now having a college education makes one smug, i thought meant i was barely employable. ain't dat some trifling jonx. -steve
I have two engineering degrees but I was not familiar with the word 'MEME'. Then again I went to college in the '70s. This sounds like a relatively new word to me.
in the 70's? it was around, you were probably too busy partying to remember... oh wait, you said engineering... nevermind, you were too busy inventing the innerwebs to have fun hehe -Steve
Eh, some people don't get teh internetz. Unfortunately, as a 23 web-developer, I've had more meme's stuffed into my head than I care to think about...LOLcats, ORLY?owls, Star Wars kid, Moshzilla...the list goes on. Then there's the AIM slang: "omg, i cant believe sum ppl dont kno wat lolcats r lolololollolol!!!!1!!111" Stupid internet...
I didn't think Steve was serious with all the !!!!!1!!1!!!!s and the emoticon. As far as "meme" is concerned I know I've seen it recently and wasn't sure what it meant. If I had known what it meant in the '70s I'm sure I would have forgotten it. I went to college in the late '60s and early '70s and can't remember that far back!!!!11!!1!! Bruce
