It looks more like VF than AU before the hole, and was likely holed a long time ago, when it was nothing special.

People use to hole coins for neck lesses, which I do not get?

That is no where near AU, sorry. It would be around VF, maybe just plain Fine.

These were used on charm bracelets, I have seen many. Also, sometimes the reverse was altered, and they were called " Love Tokens " Did you find those metal detecting?

I always feel sad when I see a hole in a coin, other than the coins made with a hole to begin with, and to see a holed coin with great detail is a crying matter.

    So sad!

    Ribbit :)

Yeah, I would. It's like a bullet hole in the head. I did see an original hobo nickel with a hole once. What a shame.

    Jack,

I only have a couple of "holes" remaining in my Dansco 7070 holed type set.

What will you do when all your holes are filled? :mouth:

Improve the coins in the set. Some are AG or G and some are AU and BU.

I have one or two that would bring tears to your eyes. I'll post pics once I get digital coin photography figured out.

I have a holed trime but it could certainly be improved. Mine is 1851 Type I with a ragged hole. It is probably Fine (ignoring the hole).

What I could use (and falls within your area of expertise) are TWO holed Lincoln Cents. I need a 1909 VDB and a Memorial Cent. Let me know if you run across either of these.

(The above is not a solicitation.)

Coins were also holed and sewn into the lining of clothing. Travellers and soldiers would have money at hand, but it would not be easily lost or stolen. I once read of an original Confederate uniform that when examined was found to have still have holed coins sewn into it.
