so we were cleaning out my great-grandmothers house and i found this: can anyone tell em anything about it?
You might have better luck posting in the paper forum, there are some pretty sharp folks that will see it
It looks like a modern reproduction to me. Lots of reproductions were made in the 1960s for the 100-year anniversary of the Civil War. The paper is usually fairly thin and toned brown to look aged. Look at the signatures and serial numbers. If they are printed it is most likely a modern reproduction. If they are signed in ink you may have a genuine note. A reputable coin dealer should be able to tell you what you have in only a few seconds.
here is a lilltle history. Virginia Treasury Note, One-Hundred Dollars, October 15, 1861 Confederate Issues A reputable coin dealer should be able to tell you what you have in only a few seconds. The legislature acted quickly to support the cause of the Confederacy, approving the first of several issues of Treasury notes in March 1861—the month before Virginia withdrew from the Union.
are the genuine ones blank on the back? this one has nothing o the back. but it looks to me as if it really was hand signed and numbered. not from a printer. and the paper is nice and thick and weighty. not like a tissue
I found it I found the wesite www.richmondfed.org. go to education Infor at the top click Money Museum click on Virtual tour. This ia a cool web for old money, I didn't see the back of the your note. You may want to call them and ask. Good luck, Cheryl
I have moved this to the Paper Money thread as we have some members here who might well know more about this note :hail:
well, theres ink blots and in-consistencies in the handwritings on the signatures. could this mean it has a chance of being real?
What it looks like to me is a reproduction... the original note had "Orange" C's on the face..not black! If it were a proof, there would be small cancelation holes along the bottom in a series of 3 to 5 holes (in most cases) You can see the dark yellowing of the typical parchment paper as well.... The note should look like this...in CHCU as this example is the value is ~ $300-350 RickieB
repo. The originals had printing on both sides, and not on parchment. They are still sold today (repos) and in lots of a few notes in gift shops.
Hi Frank.... FYI...While some obsoletes do have printing on the reverse.... this particular Obsolete does not have printing on the reverse.....but it is a repro as you mentioned. Take care and Regards, RickieB
