Question Regarding Populations: With 12 Federal Reserve Districts printing notes, you have a multiplicity of choices if you want a particular bill, like a $100 LGS. But the populations get divided up among the 12 FRDs so you sometimes have none or low-single digits for some bills. For you expert/veteran bill collectors...is this just another factor you have to take into account when deciding fair value ? If 2 bills are identially graded and look the same but one is from NY and has 30 graded in the category and Cleveland only has 5, how much of a premium (or discount) do you assign to Cleveland ? Or should they each trade comparably, without regard to the district ? With coins, you usually only had a few mints making coins, usually no more than 3. With bills, it's much more segmented. As a financial market guy, I look for liquidity and large trading volumes and the more irregularly a particular item trades, the tougher it is to gauge FMV. At least for me -- and checking past auctions/sales might not help since some of the sales for an identical item might have taken place 2 years ago. Am I right to think this way ?
It depends how far you want to take the process, if your looking at the bill Itself and not dividing further in to districts and you can be satisfied that way Great, but true rarity can only be defined from an availability stand point. I run it to this occasionally with MPC,S , with some series having 1st, 2nd and in the rare occasion a 3rd printing, however the concept is a bit different Because your dealing on such a smaller scale of availability and when i say Rare were talking populations and high grades with (1) i have been collecting and investing in MPC going on 20 years now so i have a few of these here,s another.
I never even HEARD of MPCs before coming to CT....are there lots of people who collect them such that you find bidders from LCS and big paper/coin shows (besides Ebay and HA) ?
I use to collect high denomination bills and currency from the late 1800.s But what i really liked is not so much the bill or denomination but the art work On the bill, some of the designs are really cool and guess what some of those Are right off that same time period but one thing i find kind of ironic that these are military payment there fore you would think that every series would have Some sort of military connection right ? Wrong out of 15 sets issue on the Series 681 has any connections to military service however they cover just about every one. There,s a few of us out there. most who collect these do raw, but value is Very subjective so if your a serious collector / investor you need to get Them graded, many sets you can actually build in VF (Raw) for just a few Dollars, remember condition is everything one point or grade bump can actually be worth thousands either way. Here,s another really rare note Series 661 $10 PCGS 67PPQ
