Now to be fair it has graffiti on Ms Liberty’s check, is probably VG-8 without the graffiti and possibly not real, but from the 90% melt bin I spent exactly 0.3 seconds examining it. It’s a ‘78-CC. Will take pics when I get home. Interested in thoughts. I believe ‘78-CC is a common CC Morgan. Also got 4 other Peace and Morgan’s (‘21) for $16 each. I like my LCS.
Very cool! Many times dealers are looking to recoup their money and take their profits quickly rather than try and get every last cent out of cheap stuff. The more successful dealers I know operate this way, and when I was a vest pocket guy I used to take advantage of dealers pricing this way and I, in turn, did the same when selling to the next dealer. Just remember that while you can (and probably should) be appreciative of your LCS allowing you to get a deal and make money should you decide to resell, you are also doing them a favor by buying it and taking it off their hands. I'm only saying this because you should not tolerate buying potentially fake Morgans for even $16. A fake silver dollar is a bad buy at any price. In any case, I'm going to cross my fingers on your coin being genuine; odds are it probably is.
Someone in my area is offering fake silver dollars on Craig's List for $5. Makes me mad every tine I see it!
Of course I'm not an expert. But it certainly doesn't look like silver compared to the other ones. What does it weigh?
It looks exactly the way I'd expect circulated silver to look next to MS. But I'm not your guy for Morgan authentication. I can spot obvious fakes, but I don't see anything immediately obvious on this one.
This doesn't make sense. That CC is exactly what dirty, original silver coins are supposed to look like. The others are just higher grade.
@C-B-D i’m estimating it’s worth around $25-30 but really don’t know. I have learned that it’s a ‘wide CC’ variety. I don’t collect Morgan’s so assigning a VAM to it is hard for me. Will play around some more tonight. Thanks for looking.
You got a great deal, I think the MM was overlooked by the coin shop owner. Edit: or maybe seen the graffiti and straight to the junk bin.
Almost every one of these old coins has been cleaned at one time or another. Silver shines up very easily. But of course the most valuable coin in the photo has never been cleaned in almost 150 years. It's true they may have "missed" this one. But it is unlikely. People know what coins are worth. Every jack snape dill wad with a cell phone can look up a coin on Google in 10 seconds. Even with the damage it's a desirable coin worth a lot more than $13. Still waiting on the weight.
26.3g. Pretty normal for a coin in this condition. I believe the LCS knew it was a CC and put it in the bin because of the graffiti assuming it is worth no more than scrap.
