The 1931, 34, and 47 Balboa's were also made in the states, Rev. designer was William Clark Noble also a very interesting story
The strangest "coin" - I recently received in change a two-sided quarter with Washington's bust on both sides, apparently a magician's coin? Looks like the busts of Statehood quarters.
In the summer of 1971 I was a C.I.T. (Counselor In Training) at a Catskills Mountain NY day camp. The kids were challenged with retrieving pennies we threw into the pool. I was one of the counselors collecting and counting the retrievals. One of the coins handed to me was a 1909 VDB.
I got a play money plastic cent in change back from a quik stop. I was like "are you serious?" he was like "come on my friend, it's a penny either way, who cares?" so I kept it. says play money right on it, look kind of cartoony, but not too bad for what it is. Still have it.
Growing up in the 1960's in small-town Oklahoma and working as an automotive fueling specialist (gas pump jockey), I often received obsolete coins that dated back to seated Liberties and occasionally even a bust coin or two. (In fact, this is what got me started on bust halves.)
I got a 04 Indian head a few years ago. And a couple years ago got a 36 buffalo nickel. Both were in decent shape. Vg for the ihc vf for the buffalo craziest thing I ever heard of someone finding was a 1854-c $5 in a bag of cents I ended up buying it from the finder
I got one cent blank planchet back in change at the post office a few years back. I was floored when I got it, told the cashier what it was, and she asked if I wanted to trade it for a real penny. Politely said no thanks. Even crazier, it was worn a little bit, pre-82 copper blank. Got a state quarter with a tiny indent later that month.
I received the B pence from the great British coin hunt I'll post a picture as soon as I find it. Got it at a Walmart in Norton Virginia.
Had posted it previously in the Coinstar thread, but I found a 2 cent piece in the reject slot of the coinstar at my local Kroger.
When I was living in NYC, I was buying a cup of coffee and the clerk was checking out a nickel. It was a V nickel and he asked me what it was, I told him it was a nickle from earlier times and he started to toss it in the register, but I took it in change.
Two Buffalo Nickels with three K's stamped into them. I received them in change in 1975 in Leesville, Louisiana near Fort Polk. Discrimination was still very commonplace there at that time. I could tell you stories about what I saw. Disgusting. I don't have them anymore as my ex-wife stole my coin collection.
I'll define "strangest" as being furthest from its original home. That would be, I think, a 1 centavo from Colombia.
Not so strange, but exciting to me. Got a 2019-W AMP quarter in change at a popular fast food restaurant. Never thought I would find one in pocket change.
About 10 years ago I got a VF 1908 Barber dime and an 1889 IHC (XF) in change back from a McDonald's drive through... I asked if they had any other strange coins, and they looked, and said no.
