Does this Domitian AS look to be authentic or tooled or any other problem ? It looks almost to nice to be real.
I see nothing that rings any alarms to me. It's a nice looking coin. It's possible the obverse fields have been smoothed, maybe. Everything looks good to me. But, hey, don't take my word for it. I've been wrong more times than I care to count.
If I saw it at a show, could heft and feel the coin in hand, and could get it for about $70-80 I'd probably buy it, if I knew the seller and would see him again. On line, maybe not.
I am not qualified to offer an opinion, but I will anyway - it is very, very round. This always makes me a little suspicious. An edge view might be helpful. Also, there are several Flavian experts on CT who can offer an educated opinion on the style, etc.
Looks like a genuine black patina, frozen in time. My observations/opinion, black patinas seem the most durable over time.
I should add that I foolishly bought more than one "tooled" ancient however;they were an unnatural green patina.
Ken , Bing, Kevin, Marsyas, and AngelDeath thank you all so much for taking the time to give an opinion on this coin!
Yes, it looks okay to me. I have get used to ancient copper. All of it seems to have "environmental damage." Accepting that is part of the learneing process.
You may find that liberating coming from moderns. Things like environmental damage, cleaning, scratches, etc. that would condemn a modern are more acceptable.
