It seems that members hardly ever post pics of their coins here in this Forum just to share the joy they bring. Sure - we get a lot of pics with members asking questions about the coins. But every now and then it's truly a joy to just look at them So here's a new one or two that I just picked up This is an 1815-A French 20 franc struck at the Paris mint.
This coin is a very nice 1917 French 2 franc. It is the nicest example I have ever seen and grades MS67

I have seen some Venetian ones for sale recently, i was going to buy one but considering i knew relitively little about them, i didn't want to buy before i'd read something on them.
Awwwwww now - the keyboard will be fine. As soon as it dries out It can go either way with the Venetian ducats - they can be quite expensive or surprisingly affordable. It all depends who you buy them from Let's just say I got this one from the right person

Too bad there is no way of knowing if it was struck before or after the 100 day period when Napoleon returned from exile. (March 10, 1815 – July 8, 1815). Maybe someone can come up with a spurious way of claiming when it was allegedly struck much like half dollars at the New Orleans mint under the US, State of Louisiana, Confederacy etc. You could then claim your coin is one of the very rare pre-100 day Louis XVIII coins worth a huge premium, based upon the absence of some minor die scratch or other minutiae. Never did understand why Napoleon left Elba, it's just an incredibly beautiful place. And best of all, somewhat of a secret to the tourists unlike the rest of Tuscany.
I just added the 1917 Italian 2 Lire (NGC MS63) to the collection at the Chicago ANA. Completes the 4-year set for me, 1914-17. MS65, MS65, MS63, MS63. No question (at least for the Italian issues) the 1917 is the very hardest to find in true UNC.
Who you buy them from and which Doge, some are super common while others impossible to find. I've got a little collection of those too, only 5 coins so far. But there is something irresistible about 18th, 17th, even 16th century gold in mint state when it can be had for only $500-600.
To be honest, I dunno. Never really cared to find out. I'm reasonably certain you're aware that I don't own any of the coins anymore, given how long you've been a member of the forum. But pinning down the specific mintage, as in 1st striking, 2nd striking, 3rd etc, of any given coin from this era, as well as several other eras, can be done with reasonable certainty in many cases. In fact it has already been done with a great many coins, and that knowledge is readily available provided one has the right books. With French coins, I've still got quite a few of those books, but not all anymore, I've sold some to other collectors who had need or desire of them. Even so, I'll look, once I have to time, and report back to you what I find - if anything. You could very well be right, there may not be a way to tell in this case. But in many, there is.
I'm kinda surprised that this thread didn't keep going. This had to be one of the first threads in the world coins forum. Instead, another thread, "post your new acquisitions" got the attention it seems.
