i have a 1937 that i got in indy. it a great coin. i would love any history or info on the coin. its in a 2x2 in a info packet. i came so close to the coin being worth between $850.00-2,700.00 as it was a 1937, but it was not three legged. so its only worth $1.10. on a scale of 1-10, how would u rate the design of the coin, and on the same scale how much do u like the coin. :computer::kewl::smile:hail:hya::whistle::desk::headbang:
I would give the design a 3/10 but thats just my personal taste. I'm more of a fan of earlier coins with lady liberty on the obverse and eagle reverses are my favorite. I did read something today about the buffalo nickel being very popular when it first came out due to the "all-American" design.
I learned in the red book that they're 75% copper and 25% nickel. I wouldn't have guessed that. I thought they were an alright design. I'm re-starting up a Whitman folder of them.
One of my all time favorite coins -- I'd grade it a 10 of 10 for design and 9 of 10 in personal preference. There's just something cool about the native-american design and the high-relief that makes this among the neatest of all the US coins, in my opinion.....
So far as new eye appeal, I think it is one of the nicer ones. However, the functionality of the design is one of the worst out there. That is why there are so many rolls of dateless buffaloes out there.
But I still love my first one: Truly a series you can collect at virtually any price level -- what's not to like???
this looks like my first and only one. down to the date and mint mark. it the mark and P, D, or i know not really, a F.
Buffalo nickels are generally considered one of the best designed US coins. Among others are the Walking Liberty Half and St. Gaudin's Double Eagle.
For some reason I've never been a huge fan. I think it because the bison IMO on the reverse looks "squished" on there. I also didn't like the rough fields of the original design which is what they use for the current bullion examples. ( I guess that explains my preference of the Walking Liberty design for bullion.)
I think the Buffalo nickel is one of the finest general circulated US coins the Mint has produced definitely the finest 5-cent piece IMHO. I only have a few uncirculated examples the price being the reason I don't actively collect them. Story I hear is the mint from the first year couldn't wait to replace the design (have to wait 30 years by law) The hardness of the material plus the high relief was extremely hard on the dies also the raised date wore off rapidly! Wish I had the $$$ to assemble a nice uncirculated set.
Buff nickels are great - I love the design, not as much as some of the older series, but it is up there. I am thinking about doing a Dansco album on them.
this series never intrigued me. I guess it is because they just don't look appealing in lower grades.
Buffs are great when they are of grade VF or better.Talking to one dealer, he mentioned a majority of these on sale have been cleaned. How much truth is there to that?
