I recently came across this punched coin. If I'm reading the punch correctly, it says "AN CARPENIER"

I'm curious about whether this is a merchant, a sutler, or perhaps just a memento someone made for a loved one going off to war (or coming home). Any thoughts?

Since some of the letters are backwards, upside down or out of order I hope it's not professionally done by a business.

NV CARPENTER And some letters double punched. Lost to time as to the owner of that punch set

Counter-punched, not counter-struck. Individual punches were used, not a die.

    Ah, counter-punched. My apologies.
