Got this interesting one as well yesterday. I can't find an exact match, but I believe it is Maximus Caesar, from Perge in Pamphylia. AE24mm, 6.94g ... AI - IOV - OVH - MAΞIMON - C, Laureate bust R Distyle temple with cult statue (of Artemis?), legend is unclear but could easily be ΠЄPΓAIΩN I can't find an example of Maximus with a temple reverse for this city in any of the databases I searched. I did however find a very similar coin of Maximinus: https://www.biddr.ch/auctions/leu/browse?a=354&l=332870 Here is a coin of Maximus Caesar from Perge; different reverse and different bust, but same obverse legend https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=4280451 Is this coin unpublished, or am I looking in the wrong places?
WOW, I've seen a few for Maximinus with temple reverse, but never Maximus my guess it is an extremely rare coin in great condition. Congrats.
I agree. The Maximus is some coin but the portrait on that Maximinus is beyond great. Unfortunately, the boy suffered from being too good looking. I would suggest you consider that coin to be one o keep long term. At least, it will be hard to replace.
Thanks guys. It's nice to know that I didn't miss something obvious with this one and that it is indeed a rarity. Unfortunately, I had bought the lot with an eye to keeping one or two coins and selling the rest to hopefully end up better than if I had just bought them... I ended up "needing" five coins from the lot, comprising three upgrades and two holes filled. It's a fascinating coin and exceptional as far as provincials go, but it just doesn't "fit" my collection, as I already have a very nice Maximus sestertius. It wouldn't get the attention or appreciation a rare coin deserves. So the coin will hopefully be going to its "forever" home soon... the question is, what's the best way to get it there? I do probably 95% of my selling via 99 cent auctions on ebay and usually hit my target profit while giving my customers better prices than they would get at an auction house. I've learned valuable lessons about not doing this for potentially very valuable coins, however... from what I have seen, this is likely a $150+ coin, but I doubt I would get that at the mercy of the bidders... perhaps I should try consigning it? Maybe listing it here?
Tough to say what the price will be. eBay is not a bad way to go. If you can get it into a cng auction, you will do well. Post a link here if you do list it as this is obviously good press that will help you.
