I bid on this 1796 large cent on eBAY over 4 weeks ago, and i was very relieved when the postman finally brought to my door today. It took 4 weeks to cross the ocean..... but the wait was worth it, and as usual i am relieved it did not get lost, or worse go, through customs. It is graded PCGS AG3, thus not too much detail, but a satisfying coin nevertheless. It is a S-116 variety, R-5. I hope the pics are clear enough. The other coin is a 1797 cent which i have had for a long time. It was one of the very first early US cents i obtained. Nice detail and smooth surfaces, very pleasing overall (my opinion), just the reverse is a bit weak. As usual, i would really appreciate having your comments. Regards, Eduard
eduard: Nice pieces. On the '97, bottom right, is that uneven wear (on the CA) or is the planchet uneven? Still, very nice.
Frank, i forgot to indicate which variety this is. The answer to your question with regard to the weakness at "CA" lies therein: This is S-137 (R2+). One characteristic of which is a bulged reverse at ICA. (my picture is too fuzzy at the bottom, there is actually more detail there, but ICA is definitely weak).
Nice! I'm green with envy (oooooo, bad color to mention in connection with copper coins.) I'm going to own a 1790-something coin one of these days. Most likely a common variety 1797 or 1798 cent, but a half cent is a possibility too. Going to look during the big Baltimore show in June.
Congrats on the new coin. Sure looks like more detail than most AG3s I see -- perhaps silently net graded for surface issues. Regardless, that's a very nice coin on a very tough date. I REALLY like the 1797. Lots of detail and still quite attractive. I'd be proud to own either & thank you for sharing your wonderful collection...Mike
