  1. This is an exciting find! If its real of course! Weight 12.2 grams which is close to correct for the new planchet made in 1853.
    Everything looks good. If it were altered someone would have had to grind out the arrows and rays on the entire reverse perimeter.
    Please give us your opinions on this unique coin!

    No, it's not even an alteration of a real coin. Plain and simple . . . it's a forgery.

    I don't collect these. How can you tell it's a forgery. I could really use the education. Thank you. Can't find much on the internet about counterfeits.

  5. It is silver, the correct size and looks to have patina. Is it an old fake? What is your expert opinion other than it's fake?

    The characters in the date are completely wrong for that year, for both WA & NA coins from New Orleans.

    The 3 looks wrong and the 5 doesn't match an 1853. Looks like an altered 1858-O.
