Hi, looking to find more info on this token. As you can see from the photo, it’s fairly crude...almost looks ‘handmade.’ The 1D is on both sides, as is the fairly crude dashed circle. This is neither coin nor medal alignment. The reverse is at a 90 degree angle, so rotated about 1/4 of a turn, not 1/2, as are many. I have a number of British tokens, French monnaies de nécessité, and other gaming tokens. This seems to fit in with them. I’d love to know more about this particular one, though. Thanks ahead of time!
In my professional (ahem) opinion, it is a 1-penny token from the United Kingdom. That much is certain. I have some not at all like this one but in the same general family, the way that maybe horses and giraffes are. Probably from a workers' cooperative of some kind. If it were from a store as a good-for it would say the name of the place. D for pence. LSD: Pounds, Shillings, Pence. Also rendered as £ / d. L for Libra the slash / a long s as in our Constitution which has "Congrefs" the small s being for finals or seconds. And d from the Latin "denarius" the ancestor of the medieval Germanic "pfennig."
Thank you! I was pretty sure it was from the UK and pretty sure it was a penny, so I’m glad to have confirmation. I found one exactly like it doing an image search, but it didn’t lead to anything. I have a number of tokens / notgeld/ etc., and was guessing that this was related. .Again, the confirmation is much appreciated. I also have some French tokens that were early gaming tokens, and they have only a number or denomination on them, so I had thought that might also be a possibility. I’d love to know more, if anyone has seen one like this... Thanks again!
