The reason so many gold coins are selling around melt right now is because gold is so high and the economy is hurting.

If the numbers match the coin then you should just pay for it. You already said you would when you bid. I dont think anything is shady about the coin.

It looks to be genuine, but is a Half Eagle, not an Eagle. Is that perhaps part of the reason you thought the price was low? Often, bidders wait until the last minute to place bids on Ebay. Edited to add: At $400 you paid an OK price but I wouldn't say it went cheaply.

Cheap for what I have seen some similar going...esp on UK ebay where they pull prices out of thin air.

A gold sovereign which is almost identical in size and weight almost always sell for over $400.

I know the sizes and specs of this coin and that is it a $5 which is smaller than a nickel I believe.

Someone above said the coin is worth about $350, but $50 is nothing compared to finally having what I believe to be one of the most beautiful coin designs ever.

In any event it was the cheapest 1/2 eagle indian head I had seen going on ebay in a Looong time.

No, $50 isn't that big a deal but someone above here said 'it was going for around melt' and that was wrong ~ unless gold was about $1600 an oz the day it was bid.

The price seems right on for the grade. Why did you think it was low?

My personal spin is it's a bit overgraded. That's a lot of wear on the eagle's shoulder, and a bit baggy on the reverse.

In my mind, AU58 is the "MS70 of circulated coins"... they should be the very best circulated coins, with good strikes, nice luster, very minor hits, and only the lightest wear.

    AU53 at best.
