I got this Morgan dollar the other day and am having a difficult time figuring out if real or fake. Tidbits about the coin are the weight comes in good. I've acid tested it which checks out. Non magnetic. Have not measured diameter. Only thing throwing me off is the mint mark. It just looks like a square. Could it be an error? Let me know your thoughts!! Oh and someone had the name Johnny engraved across face of it. Check out the pics!
Welcome to CT! When you say: do you mean you bought it, you found it, it was given as a gift..? It looks to be a San Fran mint mark that took a direct hit. The coin itself is very well circulated, & with the very prominent graffiti, that pretty much removes it from the realm of collectability, leaving the bullion valve. I do not generally assess genuineness by pics, but I see nothing about this coin which would lead me to believe it's a fake. They produced over 9.7 million "S" minted coins, & they really do not command significant value until they reach MS65 & above. I hope your acquisition of this dollar was reasonable since it will only be worth melt value. Happy hunting! Are you a collector? If so, tell us a little about your collection.
I just compared it to my BU Morgan and the eagle is kist way off from the neck all the way down to the chest. Other semiors will chime in.
