iv been thinking of what to collect..im 15 and ussallly have a steady income from work and im wondering what u guys think i should start off with... thanks
Honestly, I'd recommend starting a foreign coin collection... Canadian, UK, Mexico, etc. U.S. coins are great, but because they're so popular, you're going to end up spending top dollar for the good/popular coins. At least with the foreign coins you can get a healthy collection started without a huge investment. You can always start in with the US coins when you start earning some real money.
yea u got a good point but i do make a good amount of money working my jobs and i do have a very little us coin collection.
Foriegn coins are not a bad way to start. You can get a lot for your money. If you want to start a US collection, I might suggest lincolns, Jeffersons or Mercury and Rosevelt dimes. You can get most Roosevlt dimes at about melt value and quit a fey Mercs for close to melt. If you start looking at slabbed/graded coins, be carefull to stay with the top three or four graders. Good luck and happy hunting. In the end collect what appeals to you and research before you buy.
yea i have just about 40 merc dimes that i got from my grand dad along with some wheities and such but i would in a way like to invest with my hard earned cash if possible
YOU should decide what you want to collect. It doesn't matter what other people think. Check out different coins and see what appeals to you. Don't rush or force it - let the answer come to you over time. If you rush into a decision, chances are strong that you will regret it, later, if not sooner.
maybe halfdimes? low mintages, prices not to high, and you will learn a bit of history. Low grade problem free half dimes. At least look at the series in the Red book.
How about building a collection of coins featuring an animal like a elephant, snake, bird or maybe ships, airplanes the possibilities are endless. Good luck, let us know what you decide on collecting. Lou
I say stay away from the modern stuff and take a look at the type coins. ie.. Bust series, Seated Liberty etc. If your looking for something more modern, I think that the Jefferson Nickel series is very undervalued in higher grades. BUY THE BOOK!!!
yea u guys have really good ideas...have my own firewood business now and i just got my first excavator from my dad who has a excavation company so while im selling firewood i am making a good chunk of change at 150 a cord so i have a little extra to invest in some coins
If the goal is investing, you should pick a mutual fund and start putting the money into it on a regular basis. Coin collecting won't accomplish what you want.
its not so much of a money making investment i want its more of like a piece if history if u now what i mean
If I was looking for a coin series of early United States history my choice would be the bust half dollars. Lou
I'll have to agree with Mark on this one. I could recommend coins to you all day long and give you several reasons why you should buy them but in the end its your money and your coins that you'll be buying. Buy the coins that you'll enjoy collecting. If you want coins that have a history by all means buy old circulated coins, any of them. Truthfully, you're not going to enjoy your collection unless you buy the coins that you want.
unless you can go to a show buy something for 30 bucks run to another and get an offer for the coin for 100 but seriously investing without knowledge is dangerous. get a professional to advise you if you still want to do it IMHO
Your first purchases should be BOOKS! The RED BOOK, Travers' SURVIVAL MANUAL, and a book on whatever series you might be interested in. The Numismatic waters are full of sharks, so you will save yourself alot of grief if you acquire some knowledge first.
All mutual funds are professionally managed. Records are easy to verify. Many are even good, some not so good. Virtually all advisors are salesmen, not not portfolio managers. They should be considerded dangerous to your financial health. In fact, if that is the only alternative, I would change my earlier advice and just use the money to buy silver coins of any type.
