50p machine doubling or double die

how can you tell if a coin is md or dd, do modern coin's have dd or just old coin's

Die deterioration. Note the "doubling appears on BOTH sides of the digits. If this was a mid 19th century US coin we might call it Longacre doubling but in this case the die is "crumbling" along the edges of the digits.

 

That would be Doubled Die.. Not double die
