I went to a local coin shop today to try to cherry pick thru their inventory, but unfortunately they didn't have any 2008's. I'm eagerly awaiting my order of 10 from the Mint. All I want is just ONE!
I think speculating is what adds excitement to this hobby. We're always hoping that we find that special piece for our collection. What was the total mintage for the 1995-W ASE? In the low 30,000 range? That's the key for the ASE series. How many of these 2008 reverse of 2007 ASEs will there be? More than 30,000? Fewer than 30,000? There are some collectors that already own 10-20+ of these varieties. What are they worth? Should I pay $250 for one now, or wait? Will the price of the 1995-W drop? I'm still new to this hobby, but yes, speculating adds lots of excitement to the hobby for me. I guess I may want more than ONE of these coins like I previously posted......and ONE of the 1995-W ASE as well! Hmmm, the price on Ebay went up to $300 for the Buy It Now for a boxed version. A few days ago you could get a NGC MS70 for $250. I searched and found a retailer who is selling one for $150. What to do? What to do? (For the curious, Gainsvillecoins has it for $150. Anyone find it cheaper?)
I don't feel that way about my collection. It's the aesthetic and historical part of coin collecting that is interesting to me. Speculating is like gambling. A new variety to me is almost of no interest most often. Ruben
Wouldn't it be ironic if the 2007 reverse was now being used in production and that the 2008 is no longer being employed?
I somewhat agree. I have no interest in speculating and paying high prices for current coins on the off chance that they may become high-dollar varieties in the future. However, I do enjoy the thought of getting a rare variety at its original cost while it's still available from the Mint. I won't be buying one of the "errors" from eBay for $250, but I may spend $250 on 10 of them from the Mint just to see what I get.
From what I've been able to find in "public" arenas (coin forums, Ebay, coin retailers) there have only been the reverse variety on the unc. "W" coins; however I did read in another forum that someone claimed to have many of the 2008 bullion ASE with the 2007 reverse, but there is no tangible proof yet the regular bullion with the 2007 reverse exists. If it exists I'm sure we'll see one go for some astronomical price on Ebay. Btw, I admit that I bought a "W" reverse of 2007 today for $150. Maybe I threw $100 away, or maybe I got a bargain. That's just part of this hobby. I'm an ASE collector and I just need one for my collection. Now that word is out on the reverse variety it will be harder to get one at issue price. The coin shops will probably search their supplies, and the Mint may be selling everyone's returns that were searched over. The Mint may continue to offer the 2 varieties, but even if I buy 100 will I be lucky enough to get one with the 2007 reverse? Maybe I overpaid, maybe I didn't, but owning the coin will give me enjoyment to look at it, and compare it against my other 2008 W's. Congrats to those of you who got one or more from the Mint! Let's see what the 2007 reverse goes for in a few weeks, months and years from now.
There were two threads started on this topic and one of them had a link to a site that had both together. Too tired to look, but it would be one of the first posts on either this thread or the other one.
The year-to-date total mintage for the 2008 W ASE is 208,410. http://www.numismaticnews.net/Default.aspx?tabid=459&articleid=10778&articlemid=1391#1391Articles (The mintage numbers for the 2008 W ASE are shown in the small box to the right of the 1st paragraph in the article.) I don't have time now to search the mintage numbers for the 2007-W and 2006-W ASEs. Does anyone have those numbers?
2008-W Rev 2007 Assuming a fraction of 200K, (hopefully the Mint is pulling all errors out of stock as of now?) 2008-W 190,653 BU 2007-W 563,771 BU 2006-W 470,000 BU
Where did you get your numbers, especially the 2008 ytd total? In my previous post i had the 2008-W ytd total as 208,410 according to Numismatic News. I've seen than 190,xxx total posted in several different coin forums as well. Well, I got my NGC MS69 2008 Reverse of 2007 coin in the mail yesterday. I paid $150 for it from Gaineville Coins, but later found out that Moderncoinmart had it for $119 (price has since gone up to $179.) It was my son's birthday yesterday son I gave it to him as one of his gifts. My initial shipment of 10 2008-W's from my subcription from the Mint yielded zero of the variety. The second order of 10 I placed on 4/18 has shipped on 4/24. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get at least one raw variety in that batch. The May 5th and May 12th issues of Coin World will have an article about the variety coin. Anyone here subscribe to Coin World? Can you let us know what they say about this variety?

I've seen than 190,xxx total posted in several different coin forums as well. I took it from the April 29, 2008 issue of Numismatic News recieved a day or two ago. They may have updated the data on their online website, but I have yet to visit it. It wouldn't strike me as odd with a +20K increase with everyone re-ordering for a second chance. I just hope the Mint has taken action. I too have bought one from Silvertowne for $179.00. As I collect BU -W and Proof Silver Eagles, I had to pick one up. If it was some mindless error I would have passed, but this is a very obvious and noteworthy variety. John L.
Did anyone notice that they had the error printed in their 2008 Spring Mailing? They show it under the proof eagle and tada..its the 07 reverse....Odd?
I read somewhere that the May 12 Coin World magazine states that the Mint estimates it made 47,000 of the Reverse of 2007 variety using 15 dies over 3 shifts, but it's not known how many were actually released. If that's true, then approximately 1 out of every 4 should be the Reverse of 2007 variety, since 47,000 is approximately one-fourth of 208,410. It doesn't sound like that's the case so now that the word is out the price for the variety coin is jumping higher. I'm anxiously awaiting my order for 10 more 2008-W's that I placed at the Mint on 4/18. It should come any day now.
