Are these Ancient or Medieval Russian Coins?

Discussion in 'Ancient Coins' started by TheSilverpicker, Aug 8, 2019.

  1. I just recently got these coins in a mixed lot I bought off eBay. Can't tell if they are ancient or Medieval. Believe they are Russian, though.

Can anybody give me a little more background on these? Would love to know more about them!

The 3rd coin is Russian Wire Money. I don't have my references handy but someone should be able to ID it for you.

Can't make out anything on the first coin. The second coin my be ancient Greek

@Oldhoopster is spot on about the third coin: an early modern Russian "wire money" kopek. There are countless types of these, but I read "MOC" for the Moscow mint on the obverse, and Mikhail Fedorovich ("... МIХAIЛ[Ъ] / ФЕДОРОВI[Ч]") in the second and third line of the reverse. This makes your coin a kopek of Tsar Michael I (r. 1613–1645), the first Romanov ruler. The full ID for your coin will be something along these lines.

Your second coin appears to be from Pantikapeion, Thrace, 3rd–4rth century BC. If you compare it to the coins listed here, you should be able to find a match. Concerning your question about these being Russian coins: Pantikapaion was located on the Crimean Peninsula. Giving an opinion on whether this area is part of Russia would violate the forum rule against political debates.

I have no idea about your first coin.

  5. Considered doing a charcoal rubbing of the first coin to get a better idea of what's on it? I can only make out what looks like an 'R' on the first image and gouges running across it as though it was plowed up from a field.
