MS means Mint State. Basically means uncirculated condition. The grades for unc. coins are MS 60(being basically just unc. having probably alot of scratches and dings on it but has no trace of wear) to MS 70 ( being the perfect coin. No contanct marks at all or bagmarks. Someone might be able to explain it better than me, but so far that is the best I can explain it. Nice coins again Coinlover. Phoenix
I've been jumping around for awhile within the numismatics field, but I have always had a special liking for mercury dimes, and have decided to try and complete a set. anyone have any tips or comments about Mercs?
Most of the collection you can get for pretty cheap, but there are a few pretty expensive coins and one, the 1916D, that's really way up there in price. If you're just starting out my suggestion would be to go to your local coin store, get a whitman folder ($3) and ask to buy a roll of of merc dimes. At the shops I go to they'll sell you one for just over melt value. A lot of the later date coins are only worth their silver value even in VF condition and higher so you should get some luck picking out quite a few dates from a roll. Make sure to tell the person in the shop you'd like a good selection of dates and hopefully they'll be willing to help out. Also at my local shop there's a box full of mercs that they'll price up individually for you, just pick through for the ones you want. That's another good way to get a kick start. Personally I like a collection that's pretty well matched in condition, I'm slowly working my way to getting a complete in about VF where all of the vertical stripes in the "bundle of sticks" (not saying more incase the YN OP is going to research ) are visible. You can probably get 60% of the collection in that kind of shape for about melt, more if you keep searching. It's a fun collection. They're beautiful coins from MS to VF but below that get ugly quick IMO.
I completed my set of Mercury Dimes last year. My advice to you would be to buy the key and semi key dates first if you can afford them, obviously the 1916-D, 1921 and 1921-D. I gave $179 for my 1921-D and it seems like the prices of these are shooting up faster than weeds on miracle grow. The common dates will be easy to find. Good Luck!!
Thanks indianhead and brit. I already have probably 20, but it has never occured to me to actually try and collect them. I figured they were a good series to collect, with mainly middle-priced coins, and a wide variety of dates and mintmarks to collect. I'm gonna try to collect as many as possible, within reason. There are some of the coins that are just outside of my budget. Thx again for the help.
I don't know how I missed this thread ! Yes people do have these in unc and proof condition.. I've been a Merc lover for a while. This is 1 of my Merc sets. This is an AU/BU set that I'm quite proud of. There are still some that are out of reach in BU right now as work is slow. So what I've done is get as many with FSB. Right now I have 45/77 w/FSB and always looking for them. Hope you guys enjoy the pics.. John
