In browsing an online dealer, I came across this coin. The date seems funny to me, but none of the books I have on hand mention anything about any type of double date for an 1882 S Morgan dollar. Could it be that this is an unknown variety?? Or is it just the pictures lighting making it look like something is up? I'm talking about below the 2 and the second 8, and above the 1 in the date. It is graded by ICG as an MS-65, with a price tag of $140.....it seems like a fair price for the given grade. What do you guys think?? I find a mention of VAM-20.....slightly tilted S....... Is that S slightly tilted?
IMO the S looks tilted.. keep in mind I own a total of 5 Morgans... And also that coin looks beautiful. If the price is right for that grade.. why not? If it turns out to be something you dont think it is. You can always turn around and sell it
If it were me I would buy it and get it attributed by ANACS. A high grade VAM as such, would command a premium of sorts. I couldnt find any auction results but, to be certain on the variety type click here to compare with other photos of VAM-20. Link goes to VAMworld.
ICG has been decent, in my view. I think this coin in particular is pretty close. I'm torn between a high 64 and a low 65. However, the price is too high, in my opinion. If it were a blatant 65, it'd be ok, but I'd try to get a better deal. I'd feel better paying $100 for it. Good Luck
Offer him $100 and see if he goes for it. If he doesn't and you decide to pass, please PM me with the dealer's name as I'm interested.
Thats the thing. I bought it this afternoon. THEN i read Rotobeasts reply. Heres the URL http://www.coinandstampgallery.com/ACE_1200_Dollars/AjhS$ 1882-S ICG-MS65.htm I am new to all of this. Most of my collection was picked out of circulation over the course of 30 years. It wasnt untill about a year ago that I started selling off common coins to purchase "better" pieces. I never thought to try and bargain with online dealers. Is that normal practice? Could I have sent an offer of $100, and tried to cut a deal with the seller? .....I mean, I guess I could have, what would have been the harm. Needless to say, I own it now. I don't feel bad about the purchase in the least. I see the same coin being sold on ebay and even teletrade for right around the same money I paid. I didnt purchase it to flip it....I plan on just adding it to my collection. Soda Ant....You say that you are interested in the coin..... What piques your interest? The possible variety? Or does it fit in a set you are building? I'll post pics when it arrives. Who knows, maybe its just the lighting that is making the date appear to be doubled.....??
It never hurts to try to cut a deal. The worst the seller can do is turn you down. I have done it before - with coins I would like to have, but could find somewhere else. If there is a coin I want I just pay the price - after shopping around. In this case the coin looks nice. Check heritage to see what the 64's and 65's are going for - looks like 48 to 69 for MS64 and 120 to 160 for MS65. The key will be did ICG hit it on the head. I can't tell from the pictures, but it looks nice to me. Once you have the coin you can make the final decision. Good Luck!
So..... I attempted to buy the coin above. Actually, I did. I paid for it on the 25th of April, and still today the 9th of May I have nothing in my hands. I contacted the seller earlier in the week to find out the status of the coin, and he assured me that it was sent, but that maybe the post office lost it...due to a snow storm in Alaska. He also said that if I did not recieve the coin by today, that I should contact him, and he would then put a claim in with the post office. Today, his response is that he's sorry. He says that he will refund my money asap just so I am not hanging out there. I guess I can't complain really......right? I would have much rather had the coin.....now I'll never know if it actually was that VAM 20. All in all, even though I am disappointed, I must say that the dealer I bought it from.... Alaska Coin Exchange..... is OK. I was expecting a bit of an argument, but there was none. Wish it was that easy with everyone. Good Luck Pete
