Hey guys I found a real old coin and had to study it for a week to finally figured out it was believe it or not a Confederate Dollar with has the Scott Obverse can anyone tell me the round about figure I could fetch out of this coin it's not in the best of shape either here's a few pics of it
I can see your gloved hand is perfectly in focus. However the coin is not even close and so you probably wont get anybody to give an opinion until we can see clear, in focus with good lighting, pictures of the obverse and reverse of the coin. Thanks
The only Confederate dollar that I was able to find was supposedly made of gold. Perhaps @johnmilton can help you. Chris
@TTop2019 It's supposed to be a Half Dollar not a dollar coin! Has anyone ever heard of proofreading? Chris "In 1879 coin dealer J. W. Scott came into possession of the original reverse die used to strike the four original 1861 Confederate Half Dollars, at which time an authentic 1861-dated Liberty Seated obverse was mated with it. In 1879, Scott issued an 1861 Confederate Half Dollar "restrike" using genuine 1861-O New Orleans mint Seated Liberty Half Dollars as his planchets."
That is a corroded large cent. All four of the original 1861 Confederate half dollars have been located. The last one, which is believed to be the one Jefferson Davis owned, cropped up at a New York City coin show in the late 1950s. Here is a Scott Restrike, which looks quite similar to the real thing. The only difference is that the obverse design is crushed. That happened when the planed off reverse of an 1861-O half dollar was struck with the original Confederate die.
No, all of the Confederate half dollars were all made of silver. The Confederacy did strike some 1861-O double ealges at the New Orleans Mint, some 1861-D gold dollars, some 1861-D half eagles and maybe some 1861-C half eagles. All of those coins were struck with Union dies, and there was nothing on them that mentioned the Confederacy.
I made a meme that I suspect will get used for generations to come. I may have finally left my mark on this world.
I apologize for sending you on a wild goose chase. I was relying on the "accuracy" of the OP's first post. If I had known it was supposed to be a half dollar instead of a dollar coin, I wouldn't have bothered you. Well, yes I would because you are loaded with so much invaluable information! I knew you'd come through. Thanks! Chris
I used to get that look from my wife until I stopped following women with my eyes. Two things stopped that practice in my life: 1) I had my bell rung when I turned to look at someone and ran into an awning over a store front; 2) I realized that I owed my wife my gazes. She noticed and appreciated it. Steve
The only thing I mentioned was the gold coin, and I was hoping that *johnmilton* would help clear it up. I was just trying to make sense of what the OP said. By the way @TTop2019 , "You're welcome!" Chris
