    Any idea what could have beveled the edges on this dime? Could the upsetting machine have done this?

    I have seen a Rim Beveled on a nickel described as:

    "Strike was not strong enough to eliminate completely the original beveled junction between the planchet’s proto-rim and edge."

    I'm not entirely sure what that means. I didn't know there was an original beveled junction on a coin, but that explanation sounds plausible. So it's basically a weak strike.

    It bothered me that I could not find a clear photo of the "the beveled rim/edge junction of the planchet", so I made one:
